Oliviag, if I were to replace the current light, it would be a pendant. I really don't need a light there, so if I replace it, it would be for looks only.

I do not think a pendant looks good in that space based on the above pic. If you don't want a flush mount or can light, I'd skip the light altogether and use the table lamp you have there if you need light in that space for some reason.

mxk3, thanks. I agree with you that a pendant doesn't work there. I think a flush mount would look weird with the vaulted ceiling and I definitely don't want a can (the ones in my kitchen cured me). The table light provides all the light I need in that space. I think I'm better without a light there at all.

ETA: On the other hand, would a semi-flush mount would allow me to angle the light in a downward direction?

Note: I have another table light on the opposite wall that's on a timer, so I'm never returning to a dark LR.

Yea, that's true -- a flush mount would look kind of odd now that I think about it. Eh, if the table lamp works for you, go with that -- you can always splurge on a new one if you have the itch to buy something :0)

I always have an itch to buy, but I'd just as soon not spend it in that location, esp. since I don't need it and don't like overhead lights in the first place.

I don't think it's necessary at all as long as you have a lamp nearby.
