Is this just personal preference or is there a correct way?

If I purchase a 9 X 12 area rug it will fit under the sofa and loveseat and ottoman. If I purchase a 10 X 14, it will fit under the sofa and loveseat AND the 2 recliners across the room (front legs) BUT it is really taking up a lot of the area. There will only be 2-3 feet left before it looks like a wall to wall carpet. (we already have wall to wall carpet). Is there a correct way to do this or is it personal preference. We would rather not trip over it when we are getting up from the recliners but the alternative is that it takes most of the room. Thanks!

I had the same dilemme ( size wise ), I did what Diane suggested, additionally I blue taped it out with painter’s tape , it gave me a better idea of what each would look like . I went with 9’ x 12’ ultimately.

Because of the angles in the room, you have to be careful about how far from the long wall the rug can go. It doesn't look like your furniture is drawn to scale--is your sofa 10' long?

The best way to figure it out is to draw all the furniture to scale, placed where you want it, and then pencil in the 2 rug size options.

Yes, taping it out on the floor is a good idea too.

No, Diane, the furniture isn't to scale but the room is. Basically I can do a 12 X 9 and it will fit under the sofa and loveseat only. There is several feet before it hits the recliners. If I get a 10 X 13 it will fit under everything with several feet left of the regular carpet exposed on each side (approx). I just wasn't sure if all fronts of the furniture should be on the carpet. I certainly can tape it out!
