What colours should we paint our exterior house?

We bought our home in Boulder, CO in November and we nicked-named it 'Gingerbread House' as we HATE the clashing colours! We are currently renovating everything inside, our style is Scandinavian/Nordic so lots of white paint and clean, simple decluttered look, highlighting the original features such as wood trim, doors, high ceilings. We want to update the outside with modern fresh look. I am keen to paint everything black/dark grey with perhaps white windows or white trim around windows but my husband thinks its a step too far. He thinks we should stay classic with all white trim and one colour. I would appreciate your thoughts, we do not want to paint the brick work, the house was built 1904.

SW Urbane Bronze. Black looked to harsh.

What a beautiful house! I can see why you bought it and I can also see why you hate the red & green combo. I actually like the dark cream colour of your trim, it looks great with the brick colour. If this were my house, I would paint everything that is red & green a medium charcoal and leave the dark cream as is. When the time comes, replace the roof with dark charcoal (the existing brown doesn't look good with your brick). Once you get rid of the red & green and everything looks calmer, re-assess. Getting the colours right may be a process. You have a very very cool house!

Funny thing is, your exterior is a classic Scandi/ Nordic color scheme: deep blue and red.

The dilemma you have is how to stay somewhat true to the style of the exterior of the home, while finding your happy place with Nordic look. With your brick, I think some form of blue with white trim would achieve that sweet spot.

This is a blue/gray with close to your brick. this is a good combination. They used black on the windows which I think looks very classic. By keeping the exterior to two paint colors you will minimize the "Gingerbread" look. That is the trick here. What a great home and I am so happy you are taking care of a great old home! Love that.

I like the Nordic from Flo and the Dark Grey from Celery Girl.

Thank you for all the comments. I really like Prospect Heights Row House with the Dark Grey/Blue combination. When I say Scandi/Norwegian I am referring to contemporary styles (attached images below) and while I acknowledge the house does have Scandi colours at present, they painted style is more 80s ski chalet. Any visual apps/websites i can use to play with trim/windows/pillars/door options? Its such a great house, keen to respect the exterior whilst bringing it bang up to date.

I would caution against going too dark. In winter it would be depressing to me. Long winters where you are. Keep us posted.

Actually, winters here in Boulder/Denver are bright and sunny! There may be other reasons not to choose a dark color for your lovely house, but I wouldn’t let our winter weather be the reason!

Wow this needs some work to even close to Scandanavian/ Nordic. I would start by removing those awnings and all the fancy trim replace it with simple and the think about color scheme. If you need sun control use solar shades inside.

Please don't remove the original woodwork. Just work with colors and preserve what you can of the original structure and design. It is a wonderful home and inside you can do more without sacrificing the charm of the home. In Europe, they require preserving the exteriors of buildings to preserve their history. Something we could learn from here. I believe this tradition is true in Scandinavia as well.

We have no plans to remove any exterior wood details, we only want to modernise it with the right paint and remove the contrasts which currently highlight some features. I see white/black/grey exteriors are the most popular right now, and I love the very dark window frames. I am British.

I suggest you contact your local historical society for advice on period appropriate colors for your home. You might be pleasantly surprised by what they suggest. I would hate to see you apply a modern color palate to this wonderful gem....diminishing its integrity.

my fav is the green from Celery girl. It gives some contrast an some lift - not so sombre and scary but fun without being silly.
