POLL: Favorite Fall Decor?
Comments (188)I voted for the mums, but I also liked the outside branches brought inside. However, I thought the room was too overdone with the pumpkin light fixture and orange pillows. It bordered on too cheesy to me....See MoreDo you have special Christmas china for your dinner table?
Comments (11)@Cabell: I really get into the Christmas season and all it entails. We will have about 21 people at our house on Christmas Eve and only 9 of them are actual family. The others are people that are friends of ours who don't have family around here so over the years we've invited them to our house. They don't have to bring a thing (although some do bring a side dish or bottle of wine). All we ask is that they show up and have a good time. After mass we start on the pre dinner munchies (cheeses, chilled shrimp, Frito scoops, chips & dips, fresh veggies. For dinner my wife bakes a Bourbon Molasses glazed ham, I smoke turkey breasts and salmon and we make a bunch of side dishes (hash brown casserole, fresh Italian style green beans, seven layer salad. After that it's on to the desserts (chocolate raspberry torte, chocolate truffle cookies, home made snickers bars, tira misu, ice cream sandwich pie, dreamscicle fudge . . . We've come to refer to it as our Orphans Christmas. This will be the first year in the newly remodeled kitchen so I'm anxious to see how the new layout functions....See MoreCan anyone tell me anything about my rocking chair?
Comments (13)Toodlee--- You've got a great antique oak rocker, for sure. And the fact that you love it and want to use it makes it worth your time to "show it some love". I would recommend giving this beauty a very thorough cleaning, starting with Murphy's Oil Soap (available in most grocery or hardware stores). Follow the directions on the label for mixing and using it. If it's as grimy as you say, it may need several passes, with fresh mixture each time. Use it on the leather as well. Allow it to dry thoroughly when done. If the leather looks like it needs more help, use a saddle soap on it (a good shoe store, or grocery store aisle). As you work on the piece, inspect it for any repairs that may be needed. Cracks, loose joints, rough spots; anything that may need closer attention. The upholstery appears to be original, or at least done a very l-o-n-g time ago, as those are all "vintage" materials (straw and horse hair). If it is still structurally sound (sits well) and doesn't have an infestation of bugs, then it should be fine to continue to use. If it has any issues, I would suggest finding a good local upholsterer and seeing about what they would suggest. The oak may appreciate a drink of lemon oil or a good application of paste wax... sort of like putting a great lotion on your hands after giving them a good cleaning. And when the leather is clean, if it looks like it could use a refresh, just use a matching shoe polish on it. (Allow it to dry well before sitting on it, so it doesn't transfer any dyes to your clothing!) Best wishes to you--- you will find a beautiful piece under all that dirt... and it will be worth it!...See MoreLiving room redesign 2: Help me pick the sofa and other item
Comments (20)@groveraxle thks for your suggestions. Don't hesitate to point me to shops or specific products. Sometimes I could find a way to bring'em to Ecuador (my home country) or I can use the pictures and specifications (length, width, materials) to get someone here that could make something similar. Rugs and accessories could be items that I could import through friends. Thks @sandraclark. Round ottomans look good. @Avery. Thks a lot for your help and don't worry about changing my mind. There's still room for discussion about the layout. We were thinking in a lot of combinations. Always a 3 seater sofa in the main wall below the big paints and then: 1) Another sofa in front of the first sofa, Accent chairs below the window. Ottomans or daybed in the wall in front of the window 2) 2 accent chairs in front of the sofa, a 2 seater sofa below the window. Ottomans or daybed in the wall in front of the window 2 accent chairs in front of the sofa, Ottomans or daybed below the window. Ocassional Chair in the wall in front of the window. We also are open to redo the accent chairs in another color if necessary. So, about the 2 sofa possibility: Do they have to match in terms of style and color like the picture? Which layout sounds better? The picture uses the sofa as a divider with the dining room, but I'm worried that could make the space feel overstuffed. What do you think?...See MoreMarlorena-z8 England-
