Paint Electrical Wiring Exterior

Is it safe to paint an electric meter box?

My meter box is severely rusted. Power company said it’s my responsibility to do something about it if it bothers me, as it is working fine. I’m concerned about safety, is it ok to sand the rust off and then paint It?

Get a rattle can of Rustoleum from Home Depot. Just tape off the glass so they can read the usage numbers.

You might have to touch it up every year or two because rust always returns. Give it a light sand to remove the loose stuff first and clean off the dust with paint thinner.

They also sell chemicals that convert rust into another molecule. Apply the Rustoleum as the topcoat.

As long as it's not rusted through, it shouldn't be a problem. Just mask off the meter and its mounting ring so it doesn't get painted

While rustoleum does have a rust converter in it, your chances are better if you do your best to remove any rust that is there before painting. The problem is that any rust that doesn't get soaked by the paint will form a concentration cell to breed more rust.
