Help me pick art for my living room + dining room!

Would it look awful to have a Big piece of art over the couch and a big piece of art of equal scale on the blank dining room wall?

Not quite sure how to make the 2 spaces feel balanced and distinct yet connected!

No, I don't think it would look awful. I love big art pieces. The important thing though is do YOU like it? It's your home and it's important that it please YOU. Looking at your picture, I'm wondering if the art above the sofa isn't a tad big for that wall. (I really like it, btw.) Usually, the eye appreciates some breathing room around art. If you have painter's tape, try taping out that canvas' size above your couch and see just how much wall it covers. That might help you visualize its negative space better. As long as it's not Chinese sweatshop 'wall art' from a décor store, that's fine. As long as it's personal, real, and speaks to you, that's fine. It's your home and should reflect you and your life. Go for it.

Beautiful, but a little large for above your sofa. How about featuring it centered 5' above the floor on that wall and putting your two sofas facing each other, each 18" or less from the coffee table which would center with the art? In general, art can be up to 75% of the width of the furniture is hangs with. This would apply to the dining table too. Hopefully there's no TV to dictate the seating arrangement.
