Stainless Steel vs. Painted Ranges. Which Do You Prefer? Poll.

I remember a day when there wasn't such a thing as bare stainless steel ranges for our domestic kitchens. Every range and stove was painted metal. Then a trend happened. Designers and architects started going to restaurant supply stores and bought commercial stoves for residential kitchens. The new stainless steel look took over and we are still in the midst of this trend now. But are times changing?

I recently saw a video where a designer appliance store touted a new trend in painted ranges as "surpassing the stainless steel standard". Sure enough, I've seen many of these ranges painted with beautiful colors next to their bare stainless steel counterparts. I found the paint finishes convincing and a part of me preferred the look of the painted versions over the bare stainless steel version.

When choosing a finish for your range is it merely a matter a preference or is there an inherent advantage with a painted or a bare stainless steel range?

For instance, one could argue that paint, even a durable powder coated/baked on finish will scratch over time and reveal the steel underneath. Also, with hot oven temperatures won't this expedite the process of deteriorating the paint? Will the paint still look fresh and new 10 years from now?

Conversely, one could argue that bare stainless steel can easily scratch also. Once a stainless finish is scratched and marked up it's impossible to buff out and fix those scratches. At least with a painted surface there is always the option of touching up minor surface imperfections. There is something nice, however, about bare stainless steel. Its naked appearance is true to the material.

This reminds me of the 90's when the fashion house, Prada, was all the rage. Miuccia Prada made a short lived rule about the types of cars that were allowed in her parking lot. They all had to be silver. No other colors. The reasoning was that cars were machines and silver is the color of machines.

For me I'm torn. Half of me prefers bare stainless steel ranges and the other half prefers a more updated painted range. My question to you is which do you prefer, bare stainless steel or painted ranges? Let us know your reasons why. Enjoy this poll.

I don't have a preference because I think it depends on the kitchen.

I do think the colored stoves are absolutely fabulous looking - albeit expensive. I love the look of all of them including the retro ones from Big Chill and the Aga and fancy French ones which sell for $60,000 or so.

On the other hand, I really like the ergonomic functionality of my induction cooktop; side opening Bosch wall oven and Sharp microwave drawer. I have a copper farm house sink; copper hood and copper tile dome ceiling with up-lighting so I have a lot of style elements going on and so the basic black and stainless for the workhorses is fine - I never would have chosen a colored range for my particular kitchen. On the other hand, if I were living in a 1950's home, I could definitely see having Big Chill turquoise appliances :-).

Styles always come and go. It seems to me the hot trendy thing right now is the black stainless look and it seems a lot of appliance manufacturers have put their eggs in that basket. Other attempts to dethrone stainless as top choice have not gone well for those companies that have tried, but black stainless has gained a ton of traction. As a casual observer, it does seem that after 20 years of stainless dominance, the trend is moving away from regular stainless in general, whether it be a return to enamel finish appliances or the black stainless trend. I don't think stainless will ever go away entirely but it's popularity will fade for a while and then come back in favor years down the road.

I pretty much stick to the lower and middle consumer appliances areas and in those, I do feel that most of those in color just look cheap and low end. There are of course quite a few cheap looking stainless appliances in this range, too. I like the look of both of the ones in your picture and neither comes across as looking cheap. I think which I would choose would depend on the overall look I was going for in the kitchen.

The colored appliances are easier to keep looking clean than stainless for sure. On the other hand, enamel on painted appliances does chip and it's not something you can just easily paint over. Well you could, but it won't look the best, though will hide it when looking from a distance. With that said, unless you are buying with the idea of resale within a couple years, buy what you like and what makes you happy.

Yeah, it depends on the kitchen. I do like the 'warmth' of painted for myself though. Even white enamel seems more appealing to me, but that's just my personal style. I've seen plenty of kitchens here with SS appliances that to my eye were gorgeous. I can admit this: I am truly tired of the word 'trend'! LOL!

How about this word? “Disruptive”. ; )

Honestly, I despise the "polls" and don't ever respond to them. If you want opinions, just ask without the gimmicky poll/

I lived with Harvest Gold appliances in THREE different apartments. I definitely got tired of a "color" for them.

I have worked in a commercial kitchen with stainless steel everything. It isn't my favorite for a private home.

At this time, I prefer white appliances for my home.

@sushipup1 - I agree. I remember this OP's name only because he has posted more polls than anyone else on Houzz! And not only are the polls gimmicky, but they are so limited. What if your vote is outside the options available to vote for? The polls convey nothing, and are non-sensical..

I despise SS appliances & silver cars, go figure!

I really don't like black stainless, or any other trendy finish.

I do like Stainless, which has been around in homes since the 1950's or longer.

NEVER EVER NEVER would I have or want SS. My house is a HOME not an institution.

I'd prefer a colorful Lacanche or 'even' a La Cornue Chateau over any of the stainless on the market ;-)

It really depends on how often one likes to change the color scheme in ones kitchen, and how well a colored range goes with ones LR (which is undoubtedly attached, these days).

I have a white enameled range - it dates from 1948. The rest of my appliances are stainless. I would NOT buy a new white enameled range, but might consider a color, but then my kitchen has 4 walls, doors and my LR and DR are not affected by what I do in it.

As for the "black stainless" - that's a "trend" that will die quickly when these early adopters discover that that finish is just that - a finish - and will scratch.

It's interesting to hear that from you. I recall seeing a picture of your kitchen, and your vintage stove looks gorgeous. It IMHO fits well in that location. Mixing styles can work really well.

On the other hand, you are correct and there are a lot of contemporary white appliances that just look and feel cheaply made. It doesn't matter which color they are, if the quality isn't there, the appliance looks bad no matter the surface finish. And the reverse is true as well.

There are plenty of high-end appliances that look wonderful whether you pick them in stainless, with copper or brass details, or in any of the many enamel/powder-coating colors including black and white.

Our house has a contemporary design with lots of natural woods, glass and stainless steel. So, both paneled and stainless appliances were a natural fit. If we had decided on a different material palette, I could absolutely have seen powder coated appliances. But then, we picked nicer appliances to begin with; that helps.

I liked stainless steel long before it became popular, and I expect that I will continue to prefer it far into the future...simply because it is a "neutral" around which I can play with other colors and finishes in my kitchen space. It is "visually quiet..." something that is a critical design factor for me. That said, I do think some of the enameled appliances are lovely and fun, and they are wonderful in many kitchens...just not in mine.
