Dining room paint dilemma

last modified: 7 years ago

I just bought a house and the dining room needs painted. It has a funky ceiling - I was thinking painting dark? Need ideas to make this look better!

    Your furniture?

Do you have any idea why the ceiling is like that? Is this an old house? Can you take it out?

I get a claustrophobic feeling looking just at the photo. I think painting it dark will make it more oppressive. I would paint the entire room the same light color.

Not my furniture. I won’t put a big hutch in there. Was built in early 90’s - don’t know why they’d do that to the ceiling lol

Ceiling is funky and fun…definitely leans toward Art Deco design.

    I like that, Judy!

Leave the ceiling white and paint the red wall the same color as the other wall. After you've lived there awhile with your furniture in the room you can decide if you want to try to take it out or not. I wouldn't paint it in any way to highlight it.

Before choosing paint & furniture, I would first figure out if the "funky" part of the ceiling could be removed. Judy's picture is lovely.

Paint the ceiling the same beige that is on the walls. Cover the red wall too.

Judy - I didn’t see the Art Deco aspect until you mentioned it - look at what I found. I don’t like the wash, but putting the color up the sides of each “step” is interesting. Will definitely cover the red wall.

What style house is it? Are the rest of the rooms similar to this?

Amanda, it was built in the 90’s so it has gold fixtures in the bathrooms and green tile in the master. The current owner has used yellow and other pastelish colors in other rooms so

I will repaint everything neutral before I move in. For the master bath, I can’t afford to replace the tile, so I’m going to paint the walls white and replace light fixtures. The kitchen has been updated so it just needs paint. There are little decorative corner squares at the top of many doors and windows that I’m going to have filled in before repainted. What I love about the house is that it is so roomy, has been well taken care of, the backyard has a pool and the front and backyard are landscaped nicely. So many new houses in this area no longer have formal dining rooms and many times the living room is not large. Since I have four kids and 10 grandkids, I needed lots of eating space and room to spread out.

Very unusual ceiling. Never seen one like it!

I was going to suggest gold leafing some or all of it...

I think it would look pretty with light walls and a dark ceiling. It would draw attention to it’s uniqueness!

I like the ceiling...it is a conversation piece. I would paint the ceiling and walls the same color...quite a pale color, but not white Keep the room clean and simple. On the long wall I would add a long low buffet...not too deep. Add a large narrow framed mirror over the buffet to make the room seem wider. On the window wall, I would add louvered shutters the length of the windows, to each side (against the wall) as if they are open. I really like this room

    Love this!

    Very nice.

After looking at it now I realize the tall china cabinet was part of the problem.

I also like the wood floor showing.
