Bolero - A favorite for many of us!

I know that there are lots of white roses, but Bolero is my favorite. At one time, years ago, I had 12 bushes of Bolero. My husband knew that I had quite a few, but he never counted them. Then, one night I was giving a presentation and when I started telling everyone how much I loved Bolero and that I could not stop buying another one, my comedian husband stood up and asked loudly, " Well, Miss Sue, how many bushes do you have now of Bolero". I could not lie, so I had to confess. It was quite funny and he never said a word about it after that. I guess Bolero is his favorite too.

Hi Ann !! I have only been once! They sell only weeks and star roses . I had just moved here so I bought literally all the roses from those companies I had wanted . They are really cheap too. $25 each and they had a row of ten dollar roses and they looked amazing. I filled up my suv ! My other roses come from green thumb , and Louis in riverside ( not Menifee ) and Walter Anderson in poway ( not the San Diego one , what a mess of a location ) . That’s really all I’m familiar with . I’ve been dying to go to Rogers . I gotta get there !!!

Jen, thanks for the rec! I haven't been to that place before, but it's not far away from where I am (about a half hour drive). I'll check and see if they have a white Eden!! Have you heard of Sunshine Nursery in Yucaipa? That's where I've gotten several of my Weeks and Star roses from. Ranging from $22-$25 for good sized plants. They used to have white Eden, but I didn't buy it back then (regretfully) because I didn't have my garden arch yet. Also, Louie's was the nursery I was referring to that had the DA's.

Thank you so much glimmer!! I’m so glad you responded. I could not remember the one you mentioned before. Now I’ll make sure to visit. I love louies . But wish They had more small plants, like Armstrong’s. :)

You're welcome, Jen! I went back to Louie's again today and came back with a Falstaff rose, haha.

I'm going to try to check out Rose Farm Nursery this weekend.

@Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 I think you may have sold me on this rose! I bought bolero last year in July after reading rave reviews about it. I was thinking it would be a rockstar for me, but it hasn't done very much for me for some reason. I've barely seen any blooms from it at all. I was even considering giving it away since I'm downsizing the number of roses I have.

But after reading your enthusiastic reviews of Bolero, I feel inclined to give it another go. The fact that it stays compact and pumps out a lot of fragrant white blooms is perfect for the spot where I'm looking to put a white rose. I was thinking about Desdemona for that spot, but hearing what you had to say about Bolero, I think I might need to give it another shot!

@Derek Everette… if there’s bolero you have isn’t a blooming machine… it might just be a bad specimen. I have a friend who swore Bolero was aweful in the Seattle Washington… I suggested she try growing another Bolero plant… as I was positive it could do well for her if she had a healthy vigorous specimen.

She finally gave it another try… and is now in LOVE with it.

Here’s my 7+ year old Bolero in:

@Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 Wow...that looks AMAZING! It's full of blooms! Very impressive that it's 7 years old and has been able to stay that tidy. Does it look like this all year long?

DLEverette: yes all year its this tidy… I’ve actually never really purned it.

Derek, I have 3 Boleros and one is still pumping out the blooms while everything else has slowed down.

I love this rose so much! I had 4 Desdamona and removed 2. They are small blooms that seem to need constant deadheading to look good

They are not a rose that I personally would replant.

    Give your Bolero another year.

I have two boleros and they are one of my favorites. Out of all my plants, they handled our big move from Indiana to Ipwa in July (terrible time to move for plants) amd they are still blooming now! Oh, and they were one of the first to bloom in the spring! Also, they just pump out buds flush after flush all season long. simply an amazing rose. please give him another chance!

I was getting this gorgeous coloring in the cooler weather, but will bloom mostly ivory white in the heat. I actually really like roses that vary in color based on temps

Ann - utterly fabulous!!! So beautiful with its branches swaying with the breeze!!

@Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 That's so wild to never prune a rose and it perform that well! Your review and tips about this rose have been really helpful. Thank you so much!

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Yeah that's exactly what I'm looking for in a rose. Your zone is one lower than my zone 7b, so maybe next year I'll be able to say the same thing. Fingers crossed!

@Madison Post I love how roses do this too. It shows up so well with white roses. I really think I'll take yours and everyone else's advise and give Bolero another shot. It would be so funny to end up saying it's the all-star of the garden when I almost gave it away! Thank you for your help!

I simply adore the way Bolero changes color throughout the season and will sometimes even look like a much larger and more fragrant version of Earth Angel and Desdamona.
    🌸
I would grow and entire hedge of this rose if I had the room. I currently only have 3… which is not enough… 🤣

In case you’re not yet convinced you NEED this rose in your life…

    Ann, swoon , lol

If I didnt already have Bolero, I would be on tbe phone right now ordering a dozen

DLEverette_NC_Zone7b Is yours grafted? If so what's the stock? Mine is own root...takes a break in mid-summer (I have it on hot pavement and south wall...need to move it) and starts back up. Other than that my experience is similar to Kristine's and Madison's. Oh, mine was a slow start from a little band late last summer.

    Oh my word!!!! Exquisite!!

    @ Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 -

I think you have sold me on Bolero!

I have a spot that 4'x4' will be the perfect size. I wasn't really looking for a white rose, but if it has that pink center at least in cooler weather, then that might just do it for me.

Is yours grafted? It just looks like the perfect bush shape. I want mine to look just like yours! Short of just transplanting yours to my yard, I want to get the same bush that you have. So if you have grafted, then I'll get a grafted one - if yours is own-root, then I'll get own root!

I agree with Ann and Kristine. I would love to have a hedge of Bolero. I have 3 and will keep adding them as long as I have a spot. I love everything about this rose. I have 1 Desdemona, about 5 yrs old, and if she doesn't do better in 2022, she's leaving. She is sparsely foliated, seldom blooms and the blooms are skimpy.

BirdsLoveRoses: yes mine are all grafted… but I have a friend who grows ownroot Bolero… which Also does well and has nice tidy round Bush shape.

My best Advice with this rose is to Never Prune it.

    Thank you, Ann.

Now I have to find one!

    last modified: 4 years ago

@Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 mine is own root. I got it last year from Fresh Garden Living on Etsy. Good to know it's slow to start for others, especially with how yours has turned out!

EDIT: @ann beck 8a ruralish WA I just realized you were the one who asked it it was own root! Lol Sorry about that!

I got mine the same place and it has really picked up in it second year!

Thanks for the reminder - Bolero is going on my list for the spring.

Bolero satisfies my desire for a white rose with blush center. I have two Earth Angels that are bushy, healthy shrubs that don't bloom. Granted Earth Angel has more pink, but Bolero is very similar and blooms like crazy all season long and the fragrance is better. I will keep buying more as long as I can find a place for it.

Ann, why do you say to never prune it?

    Flowersaremusic:
I about yours… but I find bolero too be one of the slowest growers… because it seems to spend all its energy on blooming. So I would never hard prune Bolero… maybe a VERY delicate shaping as I’m deadheading… but that’s about it.
This has been my personal experience with growing it for about 8 years now.

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA i appreciate your comparison to Earth Angel. Ive been on the fence about ordering it. I have 2 Boleros and love them. I have such a small space that it sounds like I don't need EA.

Thanks, Ann. Shaping it is all I've done so far. Strange, since I'm in a colder zone, but mine have not been slow growers. I believe all of mine are on Huey, so that may account for it. But, I agree, a little shaping is all that will ever be necessary.

Librarian, I don't want to discourage you from growing Earth Angel if Kordes roses grow well for you. The blooms are exquisite! For some reason, I am a failure with Kordes roses.

Just want to give everyone a heads up High country roses has Bolero in stock, I just got mine :)

Thank you Alana. I have been wanting to try this rose for years here the thrips make most if my white rises look terrible but white/near white is absolutely one of my favorite colors. I was not able to get any of the piano roses from palatines and had zero roses ordered for this year but I just ordered a Bolero to try in a pot. 😁

    You are most welcome!😊

I love my Bolero rose but it is not looking good. we have sprayed it because it has yellowibg leaves and ”rust”. I’m hoping it will come back. would you recommend cutting it back?

loulouob28 - If you can post a picture (entire bush, plus pics of specific areas) of your not happy Bolero on here people will be better able to help you. Photo the back of the leaves with rust so we can see them. How much sun and water does it get? Is it in a pot or in the ground? Where do you garden, geographically?

Looks like Star is distributing the 1997 HT Bolero (Meidelweis). Picked one up as an experiment since I have the 2004 Floribunda.

    last modified: 3 years ago

I thought Meidelweis is the 2004 floribunda?

Chris is correct, it looks like you have 2 of the same rose but since it is such a great rose I bet you wont mind.

Check out High country roses, they have the older variety.

Can you describe the differences between the two varieties (2004 vs. 1997)? How about extreme heat tolerance or full sun tolerance between the two? How similar is Bolero to most Kordes roses? In 9A California foothills my Kordes roses seem to have the most trouble with heat and sun, probably due to being bred for cooler conditions of southern Germany. For comparison, Burst of Joy and Trumpeter thrived and bloomed their heads off in full sun during the awful heat waves we had last summer, many days in a row over 110°F ! The Kordes roses shut down completely, have to have some shade.

I got my Bolero as a tiny band from Stargazer Perennials through Amazon last year. It has done really well in a pot.

Thanks for the correction on whichBolero Inhave. I actually prefer the floribunda and wanted 2.

All of this talk about Bolero makes me want another

@totoro z7b Md where did you buy it? I already have 4 but beed more 😁

Mas - your Bolero loves your air pot! The blooms are so delightful!!

totoro - the blooms are so stuffed with petals! Lovely!

My new Bolero just had its first bloom! After reading so many rave reviews I got one own-root from Roses Unlimited this year and I planted it at the end of April. It's tiny but made a lovely bloom that smells like lemon to me. I'm surprised at the yellow at the base of the petals as I didn't notice that in other photos. It's so pretty and smells so nice.

I'm very excited to see how this grows! It's in a small space (between Poseidon and a butterfly bush) so hopefully it fits in just right.

summercloud - I didn't know it smells like lemon...one of my favorite fragrances!! Yours is lovely.

I wonder why the ants love my Bolero flowers so much?

@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) i would guess the ants are eating the petals bc they are thirsty. ive seen Julia Child petals ”sweat” in high heat, so wonder if the ants are trying to get at the easiest source of hydration from the plant.

can yall believe its been six months since we talked about Bolero?? Anything new to say about this favorite?

I have two DA Tranquility roses in pots, boss less than 3 years old. I just ordered two Boleros from Heirloom, and will be switching out the pots. This thread was super helpful.

    Still my favorite

This little rose never ceases to amaze me. I have 3 of them and everyone is just constantly pumping out blooms. They're all pretty good size too and almost look comical on such a small bush.

Kristine -- Your Bolero is so beautiful. It's my favorite, as well, and it's the only rose I have two of in my small indoor garden. They've tolerated being indoors better than any othe rose I've grown and are continuously setting buds. It has one of my favorite scents, and the scent is very strong on each and every bloom.
