Your post reminded me of one made years ago by Olga. She grew a variety of roses, modern and old, and noticed that some of the Bourbons and HPs remained clean with fewer sprayings than the moderns did.

I think it depends on where you are. Some of the worst rust/blackspot victims we ever grew were Bourbons.

Now that our climate is drier, we're cautiously trying some ... but I will NEVER try again with 'Mme. Isaac Pereire'!!!

Jackie - I am seeing the same on my Grandmother’s Hat. It’s worse this year than last. I have also pruned but perhaps I need to cut the canes further down.

Today I suddenly spotted rust on a young plant of La France. I removed all the affected leaves and put them in a closed garbage container. The roses around it are all very close together and I hope the rust doesn't spread. I suppose it's the yin and yang of rose growing; for all the joy there must be some pain. Well worth it though, to have so much beauty in one's life.

So true, Ingrid. My roses bring me so much joy and this year the blooms have been so spectacular that I feel I should put up with all the rust, powdery mildew and black spot that I am seeing.

Yes, Ingrid - rust is so annoying because the spores float on the breezes. I only get it on a couple of mid 20th century HTs I keep b/c my DH's grandfather planted them. I hold a paper grocery bag beneath the leaves as I cut them, so they fall directly into it, and the bag can be closed and then put into the garbage.
