So I looked that up. My neighbor probably has it, and I will relocate it lower on our hill where it will provide good things for our sliding earth and fire prevention. All good. It's a gift!

It's not considered to be good for preventing erosion. It doesn't root very deeply and heavy rains can make it so top heavy that it just peels off in a sheet.

Weed it out, It's not good in any way.You would be wasting space and your time letting that get rampant. It's a very heavy ground cover when it comes time to peel it up.

To stabilize a hillside you need trees, preferably big ones.

I'd heed the words of fellow Californians, Suzi. I know this from the seashore in S W England where it's also an alien invader.

Thanks for the ID and all the comments. Here we call them "Freeway Daisys" and we live on the edge of the wilderness on 1.5 acres of possible fires. We keep ahead of the weeds, mostly, but because these hold so much water, they are an effective fire deterrent. Our winds blow from the west, so I imagine the seeds came from the other side of the ravine. Lots of people have them in various forms. I hope these are the hot fuchsia ones, but we will move them far down the hill and let them do their own thing.

I planted some this year. Invasive on beaches and public areas if left alone. I wouldn't scare people by saying that LOL. It goes for any ground cover you will have to keep it controlled.

It is considered invasive in beach communities in California. However, there is no official statewide ban and thus nurseries still sell it here. I help with invasive weed removal one a month in the Deukmejian Wilderness Park and we always remove it, if we find any as it will crowd out native plants. It is planted along many freeways here since it looks like a nice green carpet without using much water.

The term 'invasive' has a precise meaning in ecology. It doesn't just mean that a plant is vigorous and spreads a bit. It does not 'go for any groundcover you will have to keep controlled'. It means that the plant is environmentally damaging. It's not scaremongering to explain that it is an invasive species, nor is it responsible to discount this fact or to encourage others to ignore it. Suzi, I hope that you are carefully reconsidering your plan to establish this plant on your property. It would be environmentally irresponsible to contribute to a known problem.

Suzi, if you need some ideas for native species to plant on your property that can suppress fires here is a nice article that sums it up and has little his to resources. Maybe some lovely native sage that also feed (hummingbirds) and shelter birds.

I planted the Creeping Black Sage variety ‘Green Carpet’ recently since it stays low and spreads outwards forming a ground cover instead of being a shrub. It is really lovely and needs no summer water once established; the first summer after planting natives you usually need to water, but after that they can survive without help making them so easy :-) Las Pilitas Nursery has it. https://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/plants/613--salvia-mellifera-repens

And to anyone who has a “small patch” of invasives on their property, please consider the next owners of your property. What was a small patch 50 years ago, entirely consumed our quarter acre and a quarter acre of the neighbors and an acre of city property that we now have to deal with. Between the blackberry, ivy, and cherries (all invasive here), we were left with exactly 5 native plants. Not 5 species... 5 plants total. Two ferns, two trilliums, and a hydrophyllum. Everything else that was there was gone. I’m not saying that this will happen to your property, but it is always easier to address issues before they are issues.

California stopped planting it by freeways because CalTrans workers were getting bit by the rats that live in that plant. The rats in turn fed on the invasive brown snails that hid in it. Not enough to slow the snails down...

Oh yes those huge snails! Someone in our neighborhood has the ‘freeway ice plant’ between sidewalk and street. I just now realized that is why all those snails on their sidewalk! I am careful to avoid them on my daily walk, since I can’t bear the thought of accidentally stepping on one.
