I'd start with picking three colors that you'll use throughout the room. If you can pull them from the rest of the house so that your color scheme integrates with it, that would be perfect. If you don't already have a color scheme, you can start with this room and flow out from it. If you plan to start with this room, make sure you work with the sofa you plan to keep and the oak trim. Pick up some of the pre-done paint combination cards from the hardware store that professional designers have already put together, bring them home and chose the one you like the best, and go from there. Paint colors, like fashions, go in and out of style. The nineties had hunter green and cranberry, the eighties had pink and seafoam green.. you see what I mean. Once you have your colors, you'll feel more confident because everything you chose will work together. The photo that Dyceture posted is a great example of what I mean. It has that great greenish blue, then cafe-au-lait color, and the darker blue... and they all come together in one perfect rug. Good luck and have fun!

Modern cabinets almost demand something more contemporary. We did vinyl flooring for our bathroom and it looks great. I would look for something that doesn't look like tile or wood. All a solid color, or a concrete look(large all over pattern) Same for the backsplash- Something smooth and contemporary.

I would suggest that you declutter, move out the cabinets, window frames, and TV and paint the entire fireplace wall a very dark grey or black. Then, I would suggest you have white-painted bookshelves with a place for storing the TV built on each side of the fireplace. The TV needs to be lower than where you have it, and doors on a shelving unit could be closed when the TV is not in use. A large painting with a wide, white frame would look wonderful above the fireplace and would emphasize the fireplace area as the focal point of the room. I love the wood cabinets, but they may serve you better in a different room of the house.

I have dark expresso cabinet and Santa Cecilia classic countertop and also gold couch. I don't know what color to do for my wall and the accent wall but I really like the light gray like Amazing Gray or Anew Gray by SW. Any suggestion would help! Thanks
