Our Wood-Mode cabinet order: what else should I be thinking of?

For background, my KD works for an independent high-end KD shop that has been in business for almost 30 years, and they have been selling Wood Mode for something like 10 years.

Our kitchen is now demoed and the WM cabinets we ordered several weeks ago were scheduled to ship yesterday. When I saw recently that WM was closing, I immediately called my KD. At the time, she said she was working with her rep to determine whether our order would be finished; I’ve just now heard from her that it will not. Lovely.

She told me that they are working with other manufacturers to try and find someone who can do our cabinets quickly. I have asked her what the implications will be to cost and timing of the project. Needless to say, I’m extremely frustrated and concerned. Is there anything else I should be asking my KD or thinking of?

Thanks, Pam. We don't have a dishwasher but we do have a decent temporary setup (sink in the laundry room, plus an outdoor kitchen). We are a busy family so it's a pain to be without the kitchen and have kitchen stuff squirrelled away in different parts of the house, but I would rather it take longer and have it done right. (I guess it depends on how much longer!)

Good point about the deposit. We paid our KD directly so I don't know how much of that was for a deposit. I will ask her.

More than likely if she is a dealer for 10 years...she doesn't give any deposit to WM. So she will be able to order the cabinets from another company without any problems. Her ties are fully cut with WM. It will just take longer now to get your cabinets. I highly recommend Plain & Fancy. What brands is she trying to get for you? I would NOT do a local built custom....if your expectations are Wood-Mode. Are you getting stained or painted? Framed or Framless? Overlay? or Inset? What state are you in? I don't think you will be asked to pay any more $. I find it very unlikely that anything you choose at this point, will be more $ than Wood-Mode. They were pretty high end. I believe in my area, they were 40-50% higher than my P&F! Either that or the local WM dealer had a higher markup than me. I think P&F is every bit as good! Good luck.

Thanks, Kitchen Place! We are doing a medium stained, framed, overlay. We are in Texas. I have a meeting with her tomorrow and will ask about brands. I’ll check out P&F.

I am not sure this would work for you since you are tied to a KD who works with cabinet lines, but I was thrilled with Crown Point - Wood Mode was my second choice- and the brand being replaced in my kitchen- it was practically a coin toss.

Either brand mentioned gets very high marks. I've seen both used in friends kitchens.

Hi KG, we're in the same boat with WoodMode cabinets ordered though a local dealer in our area back in March that would have been installed this month. :( Feeling kind of crushed about the whole situation and feeling like this project will never end. It seems you're making the best of the situation and giving a lot of thought on how to best move forward; if you have any other thoughts/ideas on things to think through I would love to stay in touch.

I'll second Crown Point as I've seen it and used it temporarily (but never lived with it). I wish you (both) luck, but please, please have patience and don't make decisions based on 'getting it done timely'. Take this from someone who's been remodeling for 1-1/2 years now. Exhausted, but utterly thrilled, and we have yet rushed to finish : )

You know, I had never heard of Wood-Mode before my Sales Rep. told me they shut their doors a few weeks ago, and their dealers were contacting Conestoga Wood Specialties to see if they could produce cabinets and doors to Wood-Mode spec's. I am sure Conestoga can, as they make a lot of the components, for a lot of the different cabinet manufacturers, but I would think it would take months to set this all up, and that won't help customers with partially finished kitchens :( That all being said, I am one of the few Authorized Conestoga cabinet re-sellers, and would be happy to provide any Wood-Mode customers with a competitive kitchen quote. Like I mentioned, I am not sure what kind of quality Wood-Mode cabinets are, but I do know that Conestoga's cabinets are the best I have ever seen. A step above Home Depot's Decora, or Menards Medallion, or Lowes Kraftmaid. If anybody is interested, check out my website: CabinetPlaceOnline.com
