Turnkey Interior Decorator or hire by the hour going to trade shows?

I’m trying to decide between two approaches for my new construction. I am bringing very little furnishings with me, so I’m going to need soup to nuts. I need help on everything from picking cabinets and tiles to furnishing/decorating all rooms.

Should I hire a decorator who does everything...picks out furniture, has things delivered, does any post construction painting, etc. (turnkey)

Or, should I hire a freelancer one that can go to trade shows with me where I can get much better prices but everything will be piecemeal.

Pros of turnkey are: a lot less work on my part. Everything is done for me, I just have to make decisions. Cons of turnkey: much more expensive.

Pros of freelancer: more flexible, much much less expensive. Cons: a lot more work on my part finding deals, doing more background research.

My house won’t be ready for almost a year, so I have time.

Comments welcome.

    Hi M L,

Going with a professional interior decorator or designer is highly recommended over doing this with a freelancer and seeking out each piece yourself. Interior decorators or designers often times have already worked out which contractors, architects, electricians, project managers, and/or vendors that they've worked with and can easily reach out to them to get the process going. Sure, it is a bit more expensive than doing it yourself but what you're essentially paying for is the expertise and access to a wealth of knowledge, skill sets, and people who all specialize in each of the fields required to offer you what you need to be done for your new construction. And the only person you'd have to deal with is just that one person in that design firm that you reach out to.

Essentially, they deal with the hassles of all that goes into building a new home so you won't have to.

Of course, you can certainly do all of that yourself, which would certainly save you money but it's not recommended unless you just really want to learn all of this yourself and can afford to make mistakes while you're at it. This may actually serve as a good learning experience for you and give you a glimpse into what a typical designer has to go through each and every time just for a single project.

A year is nothing in the interior design world. It blows by real quick as everything takes time and there are so many things that could potentially go wrong. Hiring a professional home decorator or interior designer would minimize the vast majority of the common hiccups you'd come across if you did this by yourself with a freelance helper.
