Don’t worry about replacing the hostas, they’ll grow back... maybe not satisfactorily this season, but they will grow back. I have had good success with Liquid Fence. It stinks that first day, and you won’t want to stand downwind when you’re spraying it, but the scent dissipates to us after about a day, but stays strong enough for them. I respray every 2-3 weeks. I’ve used it regularly for a handful of years. My mil says they get used to the sprays... but I haven’t found that to be the case... or my garden isn’t tempting enough for them otherwise. You might want to use a variety of methods, I’m sure others will chime in with what works for them.

If deer are a serious problem, it makes little sense to grow hostas, perhaps their all time summer favorite. Instead use Pulmonarias and Brunneras to give that broad leaf look--there are many beautiful cultivars in each genus. Other plants for shade that are highly deer resistant include Epimediums, Hellebores, Primroses, Dicentra, Cimicifugas, Geranium macrorrhizum, Salvia koyame, etc.

And whenever I set out a new plant, I always spray it with Liquid Fence so that if someone decides to taste it, their first taste is so awful they never try again. And they spread the word.

I'm not a huge hosta fan myself but we had so many it seemed like a no brainer to move em to the shade garden. I didnt think they ever ventured to our yard but apparently they hang out over there a lot!

I bought repels all off of Amazon last year. I didn’t give it much hope since the deer here seem to be so aggressive. But boy did it work. They won’t go near it and that includes my roses which seem to be a delicacy. Just make sure to use it on a calm day and stand UP WIND. Good luck to you

Bobex works well, but only until the next rain, and like the others posted, it really stinks. Why plant something that is considered deer salad? Maybe you should rethink your plan, and put in plants they won't eat.

If you still want hostas, you might want to try planting some marigolds, or something similar that they hate around them to try to deter them
