Help w furniture arrangement in sunken family room

I’m trying to decide the best furniture arrangement for this sunken family room. The adjoining kitchen was recently remodeled and is almost done. Sorry for the poor pictures but I would love opinions. I am open to buying more furniture. We have a flat screen tv that is roughly 45”, which normally goes in here as well. (I feel like above the fireplace is too high for the tv)- thoughts?

I understand and I think your family can enjoy this room once you get all the pieces in place. Let’s start with some color in art. Coupled with pillows and additional decor for TV wall. Here are some ideas. Use coral and navy blue from this art to bring some energy to the room. In the niche area get some large colorful (to go with art) colorful bean bags. Some simple drapery panels at your windows would really help. But have to pick art first. We can help with mock ups once art is selected and a color palette is determined.

Just a couple ideas with some paint that could transform your TV wall. Examples where by using pain, some wood shelfs and possibly some Trim moulding that long wall can be a feature wall.

Six of these in a circle on niche end in one color. Once art is selected, pick one color. No kids fighting over fav colors. (We have 4!). They are grown and I am living proof there is life after a passle of kids!! That would be cute way of “furnishing” the niche for now.

Good information about the number of kids! Where are you located? Have you checked Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for a bigger TV console? I was looking at both last night and there in a so much available!! Don't be afraid to ask fora lower price, people are looking to get rid of their stuff.

Six kids, you’re a busy lady. One question, is the room labeled family room used as a living room or TV room and where do y’all as a family watch TV?

Seajay, the room labeled family room is used as a living room (no tv). We use this room to watch a movie or the basement (there’s a big screen down there). I’m not a huge fan of tv watching so I try to limit it.

So, trying to understand. Watching TV is not a big priority in this room as I understand it.

I would say no to black accent colors, the room needs some color. Pick a colorful picture you love for above the fire place and pull a color from that for your accent color.

I'm sorry you changed the room, it looked sooo good the way Flo designed it.

Stephanie. Did this little mock up and these are just one example of a way to use a large piece of art and draw colors from it for your beautiful room. Now I will work on the fireplace wall. Bbl

I put the furniture back, added some pillows from another room, added a lamp I already had, and still looking for a single piece of art for above the fireplace. Thoughts? Thank you

Here’s the other wall, pretty empty. Needs a bookshelf I think or possibly a desk?

Something round above fp; to soften the squareness.

Other colors too, and nice texture, fun. Could relate to medium wood. Art not reaching above windows, ok...

If new stools are a direction for straight lines, etc... would this have a similarly simple look --- but be very good vibe with fireplace? Earth colors in this one seem more rustic to me and good for this throw? :)

Mantel and art -- thinking that combo of much window, tall walls and stone makes a presence that little items can't 'match' -- I didn't 'hate' the delicate pink flowers with identical greenery. If you don't like it... it's not done! ;-)

I skimmed and saw Flo's post about larger art -- maybe that? doesn't have to be full of color. Does it work to place tape on the wall, or large cardboard to simulate size of art?

I didn’t get notification. I will look tomorrow but so happy with this arrangement. It just seems so welcoming!

I think you need stronger color in the art over fireplace but a tranquil subject matter. I am looking around. If you have a ZGallerie showroom near you, they are closing a bunch of outlets and have some great buys on large art. Might be worth a trip or check on their website. This art is best seen in person though. Lots of mixed media and very pretty but hard to capture in print photos.

I'm surprised no one has suggested an area rug under the coffee table. It would be the perfect place to bring in color and pattern horizontally. Also think it would be easier to choose art and pillows if you have a color palette in mind, or at least narrow it down to season (think winter, spring, summer, fall). Look around the rest of your house to see what you've chosen in the past. I think that Flo's furniture arrangement is best for your room especially if you do the built-ins down the road (brilliant idea Flo, with the two chairs and table in front.) Have you thought of using a sculptural piece above the fireplace? Something with color that could take advantage of the height. Those glass pieces that look like flowers or something similar, iron or ? There are lot's of choices besides a painting. Maybe a photo of your family done in a cool artistic way, since this isn't the formal living room. I wouldn't buy any patterned pillows until you have the style and color direction. On the rug, a flat rug with the background color of the wall to wall, with a few colors in your palette would be easy to blend with pillows and art. Have you thought about drapery for your sliding doors? It would bring in some softness with all the wood/stone, and maybe an opportunity to bring in a soft background color besides the wall color. I really think the first think you need to do is choose your colors and style direction. Your room is big, and really needs to have thoughtful plan to bring it all together. When done, it will be fabulous! Looking forward to seeing your choices. I have the same style coffee table as you, I'm glad no one said to replace it!

A couple ideas for over fireplace. I am not sure of size of fireplace but these are concepts. We could hang the gold sculpture piece vertically course.

Stephanie - did you find anything your husband would like too?

He likes this one but I’m not sure. It’s a lot of orangy red. :)

That is pretty, but might limit other color choices for additional elements. Also, be aware of size required. You need height over the fireplace. Not sure what sizes are available for that one!

What did you think of the one I posted? Just curious :)

Molly, I liked that one. It’s along the lines of something I would like. Not sure if I like the peachy tones. Thx

Thanks. :). Are you looking to keep it more monochromatic? Mine was to bring in more color so you could tie in pillows and other accessories.

Something about rectangular shapes [of windows] and several together -- fp item with irregular shape [cause it's sculptural] -- adds interest. There'd be another spot for art - the opposite wall where there's nothing right now. Maybe large canvas, and it could have contemporary vibe if it's the thing, the main thing in that area... have at it on a store-bought canvas: you with a color, and him with a color!!! ;-)

Ok so for now I’m going back to Flo’s suggestion of art and a few other items since I’m having trouble finding anything I love in the size that is needed (oversized). Going for this type of look:

You have a lot of light colors so I'd go for something darker to add a little contrast and interest. I am a sucker for things like tall vases, clocks, chandeliers, and thin tables like you can see here, but your tastes might be different. I feel they really help fill out and add character to a room.

I had posted idea to add 1 interesting item above art with a rectangular shape [not on the mantel].... Idk that it has to look fussy or funny....
