Ideas on increasing curb appeal to older home

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello, I just purchased this property and have removed a tree so we can double the driveway. I would like to update the front as the current overhang does not work well with the rest of the house. Any ideas on how to freshen this up on a somewhat limited budget?

I am thinking of just removing the top half of the porch to open the front up.

Thanks,

Jeff

Oh my goodness. Yes for sure remove the top of the that deck. If you can't afford to redo the deck, just paint or stain it. Also remove screen door. Is there a light fixture?

I can't recall of there is a light. Ideas on a complete remodel of the porch?

you could do a pergola in the front, small flowering shrubs and if you have shade some hosts. also if you have so room perhaps a small weeping cherry to anchor your right front corner.

If budget allows I would basically start over with the porch. The width would be much better if it went from outside edge of window to outside edge of window. Also the steps need to be moved so that they line up with the front door. I know it would cost a bit but I would have the tree (or what remains of it) removed. If you want a roof on the porch then I would do a gable roof that matches the slope of the existing roof. After that cleaning up and redoing some of the landscaping would be in order. Paint the front door a bright color that makes it more of a focal point. Lighting, both porch and a coach light in the yard would also be a good idea.

    Not a Pro.

I would paint the overhang and railings white. Change out front door, or remove screen door and paint the front door a nice color. Landscaping is key.

Oh my. Well, if you can’t do much now, then paint everything white, remove that plastic roof and add some beams to make a pergola as suggested above. Plant some morning glories, or something that climbs and flowers.

Then, long term, plan for an open porch plan along these lines:

Arbor as a “stop-gap” measure in the meantime:

That's not a bad screen door, and I would never give up mine -- I love the air flow on nice days. I would paint both doors the same color -- an almost teal blue might look good. Eventually you might paint the white siding and trim a lighter coordinating blue.

I agree with what Kevin Strader said about the porch.

Change the house numbers to something more modern. You have room on the other side of the door for large numbers, and also room for a nice light (and not a small one, go for a medium size maybe about 1/3 the height of the window)

Is the front yard going to be mostly driveway? Give us a sketch, and your general location, then we can suggest landscaping.
