what to do with overgrown weeds in front yard

when we bought our house many years ago the front yard was nicely xeroscaped. For a many reasons over the past 8 years it's been woefully neglected. Occasionally a neighbor or myself has pulled the grass out or weedwacked it down. Last year I tore out a bunch of the flagstone (because I hate it), but I had no plan so the pieces just sit there. I'm trying to figure out 1st how to best tackle the overgrown grass/weeds and 2nd what to do with it. I wanted to just fill it with wildflower s and say forget it but I probably should have a better plan than that. and unfortunately our raised garden beds in our backyard are linked to the sprinkler system in the front, so if I want to automatically water the garden, the front gets watered too (although I haven't had a garden for several years either, so neither has been watered). I could use some advice because I'm not qualified to dynamite the whole thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
