How did you decide how high to mount your TV on the wall?

Hi. Driving myself crazy trying to figure this out. Don’t own our couch yet and my tv is in storage because our apartment is being renovated. Electrician needs to know where to place all the wires and contractor needs to know where to reinforce our studs for the mount.

How did you decide what height to mount TV? I have a 65” tv, might upgrade to 75” in near future. Viewing distance from wall to couch cushions is about 10.5ft. Couch seat height is 17” and my wife and I are short (5’2 and 5’6). Will have a credenza/media console under it between 18-24” tall. Ceiling height is 94”. Will be mounting soundbar under the tv so it swivels with it, soundbar is 3” y’all.

Putting the center at eye level of about 42” seems way too low. Other recommended heights in the 60 inches plus seem way too high and awkward given our ceiling height. Attached a picture of a mock-up I made with tv at 48” center and a 24” credenza.

Asks:

  • what do you think of how it looks visually?
  • if you mounted TV, how did you decide what height?

IMO, it usually looks best when the bottom of the TV is mounted around 6" above the height of your media console.

Ideal height is for center of TV to be at eye level when you're seated. I don't know how this relates to console, but pushing the TV up a little is fine.

I would not mount it any higher than what you show there maybe a bit lower in fact.

Based on 99% of the rooms posted on Houzz, go lower than what you think looks right. Your current center at 42" is the max I'd go.

^ Agreed. Common mistake is to hang TVs too high - just like artwork.

What you have outlined looks about right, BUT you need to place the intended table/ cabinet in the space first.

Definitely no higher than what you have now. About 6" above the console should be good. Much more than that can look like a 'disconnect' between the console and TV. Also not a good height for viewing.

As mmilos posted, it's similar to art work in my mind. You don't want to hang something very high over a sofa, or it can look like it's floating up there on the wall. A TV needs the same connection with a console to me.

If the ideal height is 6" above the console, you can save yourself a lot of cost and hassle by just using the stand that comes with the TV and sitting it on the console rather than wall mounting.

All our TVs are done this way. It puts the TV at the right height, is so much easier, reversible, and less expensive. Personally I would only wall mount if there was some special need for it.

^ Very true. But, mounting to wall is safer if you have a baby/toddler. Also, it looks a bit more polished, IMO (if cords are hidden).

We just finished this niche last month. The TV is mounted just a bit above eye level. Seems to be working out perfectly.

Thanks all for this input. Very helpful. Today I built a fake tv out of Fedex boxes I had at the office and placed it at various heights from 46-54 inches and sitting at the same height and distance as my living room would be.

Personally, while my eye level was between 40-43” depending on the seat and my slouch position, I found my eye naturally resting at at between 46-50 inches. My couch, dining chairs and comfy sitting chairs all have a little natural recline to them.

I decided to install my electrical outlets and wiring at a position that gives me a range to decide between 46-52 center once I’m ready to mount.

This decision seems to vary for a lot of people so I’ll summary why I am doing a mount (even if it’s only a few inches above console) and why that height:

    • I have a few different places to sit/see TV: comfy lounging chairs, my couch, dining table and my open kitchen. Mounting with an arm gives me an opportunity to adjust depending on what’s being used
    • I am using a soundbar and want to make sure the sound field is adjusted as the tv moves so sound travels in the right direction based on which way tv is pointing.
    • My placement allows me to upgrade tv to a bigger size while keeping center the same
    • My soundbar adds an extra 3.5” to bottom of tv so I can mount a little higher if needed while preserving the right space between console and tv
    • I have my eye on a 27” high console I really like. To do that, I need my center of tv to be at 47”ish so that the soundbar can clear the console and float
    • Would like to get sound of the bar closer to ear level versus really low to the ground.

One more caveat, but not about the height of the TV. Make sure your console is at least 25% wider than your TV; longer is better.

The console length and TV height in durango's photo above is about as perfect as you can get. The console you taped out in your original post could be a lot longer.

Because of the mounting being permanent, I prefer a tv setting on a console with the stand that came with it. It can be moved, changed or removed without having to patch holes. I like to change my furniture arrangement too much to be limited to a wall mounted tv. Viewing height is changed by a higher or lower console.
