Garden wilting after a week of rain - today's the first warm day

The title says most of the problem. We have to haul our water so it's discouraging to see it wilt so quickly. It's only 25C here today. Our soil is more on the clay side but not really packed; we don't have water running across the top when we water or cracking on the surface or anything like that. The kale that is wilting is already a foot tall so I would imagine that its roots were well established already. Why do you think everything would wilt so quickly?
