Paint dilemma! Painters coming tomorrow!

last modified: 6 years ago

I got my first bit of advice from the Houzz community in March and from that we have completely remodeled the outside of the house and Its landscaping.

the only choice left is which pint color do we paint our house with?

You will see in the picture a black wood sample. That wood is going to replace the vinyls siding that you see on the house.

On the left side of the wood sample is one color (Greek villa) and on the right of the sample is another color (ivory lace).

Things to consider

- my roof is brown, but does have some black in it.

- the gutters, facia, soffit, and windows will be painted black.

- non brick areas will have a black burnt (shou sugi bon) wood siding.

- the front door is A natural walnut door.

- the garage is a fo walnut door with black windows.

Painters come tomorrow so I appreciate your help!!! So so much!

Now for Pictures:

- I’m adding the wood sample and colors examples as I mentioned.

- I’m adding a full house example of Greek villa that has black accents.

- I’m adding full house example of ivory lace that does not have black accents, but you can use your imagination.

- photos of my house with two different lightings.

    wheres the landscaping lol.

I would go with which ever sample is the left which seems to have a bit more blue undertone, the other seems to cast more yellow. but that could just be the brick.

I prefer the ivory lace because of the warmer tone. I think the Greek Villa is too stark but just my opinion. I actually like the brick the current color with the walnut. I'm afraid you'll lose all definition on the windows if the vinyl is replaced with something darker. I have seen the burned wood before and it's not completely back, but more grey. Is that sample to represent the painted black parts or the burnt black siding?

Do you have a picture of your finished look? I love your fixtures and the garage door is fabulous! I have a similar plank style from CHI, but with no windows.

Mnmamax3. I would keep the brick as is but when you look close it has faded parts, paint that will not come off from the previous owner. So we have to paint.

That wood sample in the picture is the actual burnt wood. Haven’t installed it yet. And I’m removing The video to because I just hate Vinyl! Haha

Totally get removing the vinyl and wood is a great choice. I did a very poor photoshopping job but this is sort of how it will look.

I think I would prefer with ivory lace color and no burned wood black accents. Paint the panels beneath the windows and over the garage ivory lace. And paint the door a medium shade of teal/ turquoise.

Some feedback I got is that the paint colors are to white. I added three More paint colors.

top to bottom or left to right

    - aged white

    - soji White

    - creamy

I actually like the color the house is now or aged white. I think those whites seem fine on a brick or too, but will be overwhelming on a whole house. Try to find some brick in your area that seems white and hold your color samples up to it to get an idea of how white the white could be. And when you paint, will the mortar be painted as well?

I like the Aged White due to the more brown of your roof on my screen. Screens are never reality.

    Mnmamax3,

thank you thank you for that mock up! You are amazing!!!!!!!

yes, the mortar will be painted. Talked to the painter now on if it needs to be primed.

I think I like the ages white too!!

What product are they using on the brick?

It should not be regular exterior house paint.

You should be using a mineral paint like Romabio.

Like, seriously stop the process now. It's not too late. Delay a day to research.

You can get Romabio from the Home Depot and tinted in Aged White or Shoji - can't go wrong with either color.

Lori, they are going to prime and then use sherwin Williams super paint Exterior.

I would not let them do that to my house or a client's house.

They might push back and tell you that you shouldn't listen to some crazy lady on the internet.

If they're professionals, they should be open to learning about new and better products. Using the BEST product for each application should be a priority.

Taking a day to research and compare results using regular house paint vs. mineral paint should not be a big deal.

I like lori style you should probably listen to her lol.

Lori, thank you so much! I have learned a lot from you and your advice. Leading me in a great direction! We are debating between the aged white and creamy, which I believe I can color the mineral paint as you suggested. Which color do you like?

Picture below (I know I’m using regular paint as the test, but it’s all I’ve had until I get a custom mineral paint made). Left is aged white and right is creamy. Gutter downspout is there since it’s black and we will be adding a lot of black. The paint above the downspout is snowbound white, just as a reference showing that both the left and right colors are more creamy and Not stark white.

For this photo, it’s a repeat, but top is aged white and bottom is creamy. Ignore the one in the middle.

Same order as the picture above just adding in the walnut front door.

House again, black not fully added Yet.

Thanks again for steering me in a new direction!

Aged white. Hands down. Let's hope Lori agrees with me. LOL.

Lori, we should be best friends! Thank you for your help, you rock!

I personally would still go little creamier (somewhere between the current color and the aged white). I think the effect of painting the mortar will brighten it a lot more than you think.

You're welcome. Keep in mind the Romabio color match will probably be close but not spot-on and it will look different applied to the brick vs. the Color To Go jug version. Be prepared to be flexible.

ROMABIO 1 qt. Riposo Beige Limewash Interior/Exterior Paint-10116 - The Home Dep · More Info

    Look at Romabio's Riposo beige.

I 2nd the romabio suggestion. I used the limewash but it has a chalky finish so if that’s not what you’re going for then the masonry paint is the better option for you.

RE: Grover’s suggestion above, the Riposo beige is very beige. Likely not what you want based on your samples. I ended up covering with their Avorio White mixed 4:1 with the Riposo and LOVE it.
