In need of some help with my new rental

My boyfriend and I recently moved from a dated 800sqft apartment, where we had a hodgepodge of his and my furniture, to a 1350sqft townhouse. His old couch and mine are both in our spare bedroom currently and we’ve gotten a new couch and loveseat. But I am at a loss on arranging the furniture and could use some decorating tips as well. He doesn’t have much of an opinion as to how it’s decorated or arranged. All of his furniture was mismatched pieces he’s had since college. I am looking at getting several new pieces of furniture to replace some items like the awful coffee table and bulky bar stools. I’d like to incorporate some of his items, but it’s not things I like. It’s mostly like Alabama football memorabilia and things of the sort. I like neutrals with pops of colors. I am not able to paint the walls, unfortunately. They are a light yellow-ish tan, which I hate. The current arrangement has been the best I’ve been able to figure out. As I said, I do love neutrals, but this is a whole lot of beige on beige on beige. Id like to put my rug down, but feel like it would look weird (in this arrangement), it is currently in the dining room underneath my table and chairs. I put a runner down, but I don’t know about it. I also have a large blank wall on the opposite side of the room I’m not sure what to do with. I hate the corner fireplace and having the opening behind the tv. I will include a few more pictures in the comments. Can someone help me out? Also please excuse my mess, we’re still unpacking. And thanks in advance!

This is the rug I have. The bar cart in this picture is how I had it arranged for a second (a few of his pictures/signs).

The sofa backs right up to the bar, which I thought would be okay if we had less bulky barstools. Something simple ? Also I don’t exactly know what my “style” is. I like simple things, but I also love things like, what I feel is the exact opposite, a cluttered gallery wall. Some bohemian, some mid-century modern. Pretty eclectic, I guess.

    Sorry for so many comments..

I’d really love to have long velvet curtains, but I don’t know if it’d even be possible with this wall color and my furniture. I’m open to colors on everything, as far as rugs, curtains, etc. not set on just blue as an accent color.

Note.. small nails and command strips are okay. Large nails are out, unless approved by the landlord. So mounting the TV could be out.

Unfortunately, the loveseat was a mistake, as they generally are. Now you have a room full of sofas and no room for much more than that. If you can, return the love for a pair of small scale armchairs. If you can't return the love, sell your bar stools and old sofas on Craig's List and put the love in the spare room. It can become a man cave with his Alabama memorabilia and boozy dorm decor. Put the TV left of the FP and turn the sofa to face that wall. I hope your rug is at least two feet wider than the large sofa. If so, slip it under the front 1/3 of the sofa. Runners are for hallways or galley kitchens. Get a round glass and brass coffee table. Place the bar cart right of the FP, maybe even in front of the window there. Center the other piece of furniture on the back wall and hang one piece of art above it. The art should be no wider than 75% of the furniture's width. No heavy velvet curtains here. I would change out the current blinds for some texture; try bamboo shades from Lowes or Home Depot.

Thank you for that advice! The couch and loveseat were actually given to us for free, so no issues there. The piece of furniture on the back wall I planned on doing away with and was thinking maybe a taller, long and skinny sofa table.

OMG my rental apartment has the same wall color! I would go with dark wood / metal tones black / brown / charcoal for contrast. For a pop of color, find art, a pillow, a rug & pull your color pop(s) from that. For a coffee table, if you would be putting your feet up on it while watching TV, a wood one might work well or an upholstered ottoman that you could also use for additional seating when entertaining a crowd - mixed with dark metal & glass side tables or a set of nesting side tables (another great choice if you will be entertaining).

Thanks Susan! Maybe this color works somewhere, but it is not here. I HATE it

I hate it too - it is difficult to work with - I have found that a lot of natural light makes it look less yellow (unless
you are on the ground floor) and using bright white light bulbs (instead of the ones with warmer light) also make it look less yellow.

I think that your wall color works very well with your furnishings. Because you are young you have been forced into a " gray overload". Maybe you do not like gray, but so many of the questions that come to this forum are about how to make gray work when it clearly will not. I know that you never even mentioned " gray". I just felt better saying that. :)

Be sure to use lamp light only as opposed to overhead lighting. The overhead distorts the true color and makes everything look harsh. I love your floor lamp BTW. I would remove the bar cart. Scour online sites for used bar stools that are more to your liking. I agree that an ottoman is so nice for feet propping.
