I have gardened all my life with pets - dogs, cats and even bunnies. And many other gardeners I know have done the same. Except for the bunnies, my pets have always had free range in the garden after outgrowng their puppy or kitten stage. And aside from the cats sometimes chewing grass, they have never bothered any plants. Pets are just not interested in eating plants or plant parts.....unless they are bacon or tuna flavored!!

The point of my comments is I doubt you have anything to worry about. The vast majority of plants we grow in out gardens are toxic to some degree if ingested in quantity, not just bulbs or bulb foliage. And yet, there are very few instances of pets being poisoned by consuming any of them (small kids, yes, especially with berry plants). This is more a concern with pets being kept indoors and munching on houseplants out of boredom or dietary issues.

I agree with gardengal48. I have always been around both plants, flowers (bulbs) and pets my whole life (60+ years). As far as I know there has never been any to get sick from plants. I have three cats now who have free run of my property, they could care less what I plant, now squirrels, they like to dig up and eat your bulbs.

I also agree ... real lily's are poisonous to anyone who eats them. My dogs ignore them in the garden like everything else. The only thing they eat is the grass, and then it comes back up. LOL! I have tons of tulips, daffodils, etc.

Actually the bulbs themselves are entirely edible. They have been a staple in Asian cuisine for centuries.
