This is very interesting. I've been putting vegetable peelings, which in my case always includes a lot of onion peels, under a large tree in the back, but I now think I'm just going to bury them in the dirt around my roses and then water the rose. The process might be a bit slower but hopefully in the end it should be just as beneficial.

That should really help you, Ingrid. I used to do this all the time before I had a composting system that worked easily. I buried everything around my plants... coffee, tea, all vegetable peelings and then I'd sprinkle egg shells around the perimeter when I used to have a lot of slugs. You can also put paper under your mulch as the worms love it. It will decompose without being soaked unlike cardboard. If you use a shredder it's even easier.

Just remembered: if you do keep fertilizer scraps in your freezer in an ice cream container, let your household members know about it. It’s very disappointing to sneaky grandchildren looking for a treat to open an ice cream container full of veggie peelings! :-)

Perma, I think that was just what people did up until WW11 when living better through chemistry and technology became the norm. My stepmom says that through her teens at least there was scrap man that collected old clothes etc and a slops man that collected peoples old food to feed to pigs or put in compost. Everyone had a compost pile for leaves. Stuff was just too expensive relatively to consider wasting it. You cracked me up with the ice cream container warning! What a disappointment that must have been!

Perma, what a great idea from your grandma!!! I think I will need to start doing that. I contemplated a worm bin but really don’t want the hassle. I could totally blend and bury vegetables though. Like a healthy juice drink for plants :-) I am realizing egg shells could get blended too. Over time this will really enrich the soil. Thank you!
