Ignore My Unpacking, 3 or 5 of these mirrors?

last modified: 6 years ago

I just moved in to my new home, please ignore the unpacking on the table. I’ve had this dining room envisioned in my head for months, it’s not looking like my vision. I think the curio has to stay in that corner Unfortunately. My question is, should I purchase two more of these garden district mirrors or stick with just the 3? Two more would extend them past the edge of the buffet,

The three that you have look nice as they are, IMHO (I am not a pro). Five would look too busy.

Love the table, light, sideboard and mirrors. Lower those mirrors and hang them evenly please. Now, about the curio and tree........they may need a different place.

Oh, i just noticed that fake tree... can I say no to that too lol. Also, can a guest even pull out the chair to sit on the buffet side? it looks really cramped over there, hmmm mabye hold off on hanging the mirrors bc I feel like no one could use those chairs on that side.

RL, I removed the fake tree. , I’m trying to find a place for the curio. There’s actually more room between the chairs and the buffet than it looks. I can pull out the chair and sit down.... I evened up the mirrors and lowered them, It already looks better And I moved the end chairs to either side of the buffet. This room is giving me trouble!

Yes, but let's say the person in the middle wanted to get out, they would be trapped lol, the zebra print chairs stick out even further. Could you take a leaf out? then maybe the end chairs could go back.

    What's on the other wall?

The mirrors look much better. Did you lower them?

I did lower the mirrors about 5”. The opposite wall is a large open foyer with 14‘ ceilings, there is an 8’ buffet over there. I could swag the light over and shift the table but that throws off the recessed ceiling in the dining area. I could take a leaf out but I like the table larger because of the size of the chandelier...the person in the middle just needs to crawl underneath if they want out, but seriously, I’d like to keep the leaf in if at all possible. How much room should be between the buffet and the chairs? There is 30” there now.

New question, why is the fixture over the buffet facing the wrong direction? the table is massive, so I don't think taking one leaf out will make the chandelier appear too big, in fact, it might look better... Also knowing you already have a buffet in the vicinity, maybe you don't need 2 ? and yes I dont think you need a curio in here, mostly because this side of the room is so heavy.

I love that buffet it's beautiful.

We generally recommend at least 36 inches between the edge of your table and other furniture or the wall. This provides enough room for someone to walk behind the chairs while others are seated or to open a door on a nearby cabinet.

That fixture is one of two that hang in the long foyer so when you come in the front door, they are facing the correct way. I can move the blue piece somewhere else but then the room is going to look very barren I would think? I have always, always struggled with dining rooms. My mish mash of eclectic styles will usually work elsewhere but the dining room, not so much. :(

The console in entry is great. The light fixtures are all wrong. I love your lamps but they are small scale for the console. Try them on your buffet. The curio cabinet adds to crowd in dining room. Is there some other location for it? Best to make determinations on locating main further before hanging wall decor. I might try those mirrors in entry and the art in dining room. Can’t be sure because I don’t have measurements. More pictures from further back would help.

Perhaps you are trying to do too much with the room and giving yourself too many must-haves. I would strip everything out of the room, except the dining table and chairs, and add back only the essentials. You will probably find that the curio, etc. aren't really adding that much except busyness.

I can understand your dilemma with the curio cabinet if you want to display your pretty things! I had one that I loved for 30 years, in a dining room corner, but I finally decided I had too many furniture pieces and I am trying to consolidate. I sold my pretty curio cabinet, I am going to repurpose my smaller curio cabinet in another room, I moved my antique buffet into my kitchen to use as a coffee bar (I love how it looks!), and I will buy only one new piece that will act as a buffet and display cabinet.

My point is...sometimes we have so many things we love, and feel we have to use all of those things, but in my opinion, using less “separate” furniture pieces is better in the end.

    Congratulations on your new home!

No I dont think it will be bare in there, the table and 10 chairs is a lot to soak in plus you want that beautiful light fixture to shine. Sometimes less is more.

Thank you to everyone that has taken their time to comment. Flo, it hurts for me to read your comment that “my light fixtures are all wrong”. I just spent quite a lot of money on those fixtures and personally, I love them. So what I appreciate on Houzz are the constructive comments that allow me to use what I have in the hopes I’ll find a solution I like. And CindyR, yes, exactly on my curio. It holds things that are dear to my heart - and I truly can’t find another location for it, it may have to stay although It may go flat against the wall with the windows. I appreciate RL Relocation’s comments as she has been very helpful but hasn’t told me to ditch everything and start over..... perhaps I’ll come across larger host chairs I love and then I can toss these inexpensive ones. The buffets are essential because although this home is larger I have less closet space so all my beloved china has to go somewhere.... and I do use it! I’m going to clear the unpacking off of the table and take another picture, maybe that’s distracting. Thanks everyone!

So for now just center the table, there is no room for the buffet or curio. Place the 5 mirrors on the back wall. You really must have about 36" from the wall or buffet to the table, and I don't see how you can accomplish this with the buffet in that location.

The mirrors work nicely with the table finish & the selected chandelier but they have to be lined up in a row like you see below.

A fake Fiddle Leaf Fig tree would work better than the ficus in your room. Try World Market for one. I'm not a purist about the plants. I kill them all so I am sympathetic.

BeverlyFLADeziner, Thank you. I own 3 of the mirrors, should I buy 2 more or what about some botanical art on either side of the 3?

Ok, I moved the clutter from the table to the large buffet, keep in mind I’m still unpacking. The dining room only has 2 walls. The other side where the large buffet is - thats open to the long foyer and the other side is open going towards the rest of the house.

I agree, 3 looks great. I would suggest making them all the same level.

Put all the chairs at the table, not flanking the buffet. There is room for them. Have you considered removing that accent wallpaper? I think it’s creating visual clutter without much benefit...

Bri, it’s actually prettier in person than it photographs.... however, I just had that hung. If I go ripping it off the wall now, my husband may freak, lol

What if you took out the black buffet and put the curio there? it seems slimmer than the buffet might just work. I like it better with less chairs!

maybe then you could stack to picture or those mirrors on the left side of the window, for balance.

I think the entry console and art might work better in the dining room? Move buffet to entry. Just scale seems off because of too much stuff. How deep is the buffet? How deep is the entry console? The console would help balance the length of your table too.

I do like your curio cabinet flat against the wall! Be gentle on yourself - you are just now moving in, and it may take a bit of time and living there till you get it perfect.
