Width of sheers behind drapes on double curtain rod

I am planning on having double curtain rods for my front windows, which are very tall and 72" wide (it's a modern house with extra large windows). I am ordering velvet drapes from Etsy so they're the right width, but do I need to get large sheers too? If they'll mostly pop out from inside the drapes for coverage, they wouldn't need to go all the way to the end of the rod behind the drapes because no one would see that, right? I'm wondering if I can get off the rack 50" sheers instead of getting extra wide ones as well (or if people know of inexpensive extra wide ones!). Thanks for your help and expertise!

It would probably look strange looking at the window from the outside if the sheers don't go across the whole window. If you plan to keep the sheers permanently closed and want to stick with off-the-rack, you can hang several panels to fill the rod.

That's a great idea to have multiples. I had been thinking about having it more bunched near the middle for flow and use and then stretched out underneath the drapes so that it would cover more space and you wouldn't see a cutoff from the outside, but I don't know if that's reasonable to expect with 50" panels.

I would do the opposite; place dummy drape panels in the velvet at each end and have sheers for the entire width of the window. The usual rule of thumb for panels is one 50" panel will cover roughly 24"

Really sheers need to be at least 3 x the width of the windoow all the wayl across the rod and honestly sheers and velvet drapes together in a modern setting not so much. unless you post some pictures so it makes sense.
