Living room challenge, it’s a blank canvas

DD & SIL just bought a house down the road from us. It’s an older build that’s in great shape, it just needs some updating. The first thing they want to do is paint the living room, install new carpet, add some lighting and pick out some new furniture. The challenges are the slant of the ceiling over the fireplace and that it’s a dark room with only a limited amount of natural light. They‘re hoping for sectional seating so it’s a cozy spot where they can gather with friends or watch movies. They’re also planning to either remove the beams entirely or paint them. DD likes everything from transitional and modern/farmhouse to bohemian. Any thoughts or ideas?

Here’s a couple of pictures. I took this yesterday afternoon. It looks brown but everything is actually one shade of a dirty gray or another.

The listing photo has a better shot of the room but it was obviously photo shopped because the room will NEVER have that much natural light.
