LIVING ROOM FURNITURE, PAINT THE WHOLE ROOM!

I am trying to update my living room/family room. I need a new sofa and have no idea what will work in this room. What you see in the pics is my old sectional that I split in two. I am getting rid of that but still like the red leather chair. I was thinking of either two sofas OR one long one on my only wall with a chaise. I want to keep the rug but I am not sure of the tables. As you can see, it's a somewhat awkward room, I have a tv under the three windows as it's really the only place it can go. The paint I like is the Farrow and Ball Cabbage White. Any help would be appreciated.

I have gone back and forth about having two sofas OR a long sofa with a chaise under the Peter Max picture.

You don't have room for two sofas. Put one sofa on the long wall where you have the longest part of your sectional, and use two chairs (depending on size) with their backs to the hallway, facing the sliders. You could also use a chaise, if the chaise part is open backed near the sliders, with your red chair. If you have to keep the TV there, it should be back toward the windows as far as possible. I would try to budget for a long, low, enclosed console so you don't see all the electronics. Cabbage White should look nice with your rug and floors.

Thanks for the response. The chaise would be on the end of the sofa i.e., the fourth seat next to the sliding glass door area. How big a sofa do you think I should get?

Place your current furniture to see what size you need, or tape off the floor with painters tape.

A sectional in this room will look too big and, frankly, it's a boring look anyway. Get a nice long couch to place opposite your TV, put your lovely red chair near the fireplace where the front of it can be admired and buy another comfortable chair to face into the room that has a red and blue pattern to coordinate with the rug and red chair. I'd suggest a neutral color for the couch which will have colorful pillows (red and blue patterned) to tie the whole together. A long and stylish console for the TV will get rid of the clutter. After that I'd look for colorful and interesting paintings for the long wall (the one you have looks lonely) and end tables to flank the couch, with some gorgeous lamps on them. A rectangular, rather narrow glass and metal coffee table with not take up much space or have much visual weight, but will make the room look complete. I like the mirror over the fireplace. A warm white wall color would be perfect.

The main problem here is the TV is on the wrong wall. A TV never goes in front of the windows. Move it to the opposite wall, get a sofa for under the window, put the red chair at the end opposite the fireplace.

I could move the tv to the other wall, BUT I would not see the fireplace. This is why it’s there.

What do you spend more time viewing? Fire or TV? I have a similar issue in my family room. I set up the room with TV viewing as the primary function. I don’t sit and stare at the fireplace, I just enjoy the ambience it provides.

Grover’s new floor plan also opens the walkway through to the back door..if the furniture can all be shifted away from the back door...there may be room for a smaller chair ...lamp ....and table for fireplace seating?

Holly, you can't see the fireplace now; you have a big old sectional piece blocking it. You have to make choices. To my mind, seeing the fireplace is not worth the trade off of a TV in front of the window and a blocked path to the slider.

I don’t like it blocking the windows. I used to have it there in fact. Would I put any pictures on the wall? It’s a big wall about 12 feet tall. Thanks.

That's a great picture of the tv on a big wall. Where in the world could I find a painting that large? I guess I better start looking.

Move the TV and seating first so we can see what you’ve got. Then we can think about what you need on that wall.

FTR, the only place I’ve found huge affordable canvases is art.com’s loft art. They have canvases up to 7’ square.

I will be doing that this weekend. My husband said that we have to make sure that we can hook up to the net from that side of the room. Ugh. Everything is so complicated with technology.

I am shopping for a sofa, chair, table along with the paint. I have decided light gray for walls, rug stays. What color for sofa and chair? Thanks.

Wait till you get your new furniture before deciding on paint color. You can certainly build the room around the rug. In fact, the colors of your current sofa and chair and even your pillows go well with it, so aim for the same color palette and you’ll be good.

Well, I would rather have the room painted before the new furniture is moved in. Thank you for the compliment re color palette. I am leaning towards cream colors for sofa and chair. Since this room is in the visual from the kitchen, it need to be the same color in my opinion. It will not looked chopped up this way.

It's just as easy to paint after the furniture, and you will be able to choose a wall color that complements it, rather than picking your wall color now (especially a gray color) and hoping it works with your furniture.

Holly, we paint last because there are infinite paint colors. You can always find a paint color to complement the furniture. It doesn’t always work the other way around.
