How to decorate using ikat fabric?

I've fallen in love with an ikat fabric, but I have no clue how to decorate with it! I plan to use this fabric for throw pillows in my family room, which sits off the kitchen and sun room (open floor plan). I'm thinking of going with a lighter colored couch, but have no clue about picking a rug, curtains, accessories, etc.

In person the fabric is various shades of cream, taupe, warm grays, charcoal, and a slate gray which leans more blue.

Any ideas would be super helpful :)

Debz you’re too awesome! Both of these look like a good match for the fabric

Ashley, you can always make pillows out of that fabric by using it only on the front with a coordinating solid on the back. 2/3 of a yard will get you 2 pillows with a bit left over if you want to make 18" pillows.

If I recall correctly, Ballard Designs, Crate + Barrel, Pottery Barn and West Elm also have linen and/or cotton panels in 108" lengths.

Halfpricedrapes.com is a nice source as well. I believe you can order samples there.

In ordering drapery panels I would choose Half Priced drapes over PB, WE, C&B. They are a 1/4 of the price and better made. Their lengths are consistent in comparison to the others who have a history of inconsistent lengths and widths and stitching. You will never reach your target budget at PB etc either. How many windows are you covering? Which Ikat fabric did you decide to go with? There have been a lot of suggestions sine your original.

Design, I want to go with the original ikat fabric. It's only two windows.

If you are looking for off-white linen like curtains check ikea. The ritva curtains come in 125” and are only $40 per pair. They also allow you to hang them with a rod, rings or in a pinch pleat style. We used the pinch pleats in the bedroom and rings in the living room. https://m2.ikea.com/us/en/p/ritva-curtains-with-tie-backs-1-pair-white-80063833/

Ashley maybe I missed it but do you have a photo of the room? You are wanting sofa/seatiing? drapery? rug? window treatments? occasional tables? Then using the fabric for pillows? One window. Do you have anything in the space yet that you're working with?

It's a brand new home - empty slate. It's not yet ready to move in but will be soon. I can attach a few pictures of the model if that would help? Same dimensions and all that, but different color scheme of course.

I think it would help. The shape and size of the room will factor in to a lot of the pieces chosen. Rather than throw a bunch of items at you I think it would be more beneficial to you to have your field narrowed down to what will actually work ;-)

Oh and if you have the floorpan (brochure or online link etc.) for the space with dimensions that would be a WIN!

Here are pictures of the model and the floor plan. My walls will not be gray or striped, just the builder beige color, which I plan to change eventually. My fireplace doesn't have the stone surround either, just a white mantel like the last picture (note that's a different model, just wanted to show you the look).

You aren't doing windows on either side of fireplace I assume? Will you be watching TV in this space? Where are your planning on TV placement?

Are your kitchen cabinets this color?

Design, correct! The windows are on the other wall (on the left wall if you're looking out from the kitchen. I didn't want extra windows as the space is already super bright because of the sunroom that hangs off the kitchen.

My cabinets are white, and my island is a brownish-gray color.

I was thinking of putting the tv above the fireplace (not always ideal, I know. I plan to get a mount that allows full range of motion to tilt it if needed). I guess the other option would be the put the tv and a console on the wall across from the wall with the windows, but I don't know how that will look.

Okay first there are three possible layouts based on your room size I can see happening . The first one here I would do a wall to wall built in along the wall to the right of your fireplace. Floor to ceiling. I would make it shallow and mount your TV to the wall and "encase" with shelves down each side. I would not have it done more than the depth of the electronics you may want to store in lower cabinets. If that is 12" great but not shallower than a foot. The chairs in front of the built ins have low backs and it would be important to have those picked out before you did this to insure measurements coincide with chair back height which I would keep on the lower side.

If you cant envision what It would look like to have a chair sitting in front like this here is a photo to help.

Now that said I didn't know the measurements on either side of the window and this scenario can be accomplished if there is enough room on either side of the window that could house a TV in a built in thus flipping the sofa to the blank wall and doing built ins on either side of the window. Moving forward with the plan as shown here is a design board

I would do the walls in a grayed taupe. The one shown behind the drapery panels is Ben Moore Weimereiner. It is a sophisticated color that looks stunning up. I am showing a swivel chair and I would do it in a heavily textured natural colored fabric. I like the sloped areas on chairs and sofas so they don't get bulky and lend a heaviness to the room. It will make the room feel larger. I would do a white or off white fabric on the sofa. I pictured two chairs for opposite the sofa. Either works equally well. Both have low backs. The black rattan one is a bit more relaxed . I would do a simple off white linen drapery and you can find some great ones on Half Priced Drapes. Their French linen ones are beautiful but send off for the free swatches because colors are deceiving. I would trim them with some black based decorative trim for a custom look. Hang them on rings from a black drapery rod. You didn't mention one but if you can swing a chandelier for the space a beaded one like I added would be nice. Also not pictured but I am happy to source ......counter stools for your kitchen. I would take the que from the style of low backed chairs I have shown. Here is a close up of some fabric I feel compliments your Ikat fabric well

Hope this helps you pull things together as you requested. Cheers!

OOPS for got to post other optional floor plans here you go. Your TV would be above the fireplace in these.

I love the sectional layout! Would have never thought to put chairs in front of the windows - that looks really nice. Thanks so much!!

The diamond fabric is pretty! I like the idea of using black to ground the room as well, though I'll need to stick with a softer black because the fabric really is more so a dark charcoal vs. black.

Would it be silly to accent the slate blue to add a little color to a mostly neutral room?

I'd love help with kitchen stools if you have some suggestions!!

    What slate blue?

Inside of the charcoal color, it's a slate gray color that leans blue. I can take a picture of the fabric swatch that I have if that'd help.

Tip toeing in......If you look at the first post, the poster posted the fabric. The blue she is talking about is inside the charcoal gray color (look at the ring in the Ikat pattern)

Do either of these help? I think I packed my swatch :( haha If not I can dig it out, no big deal. The color doesn't scream blue but it's very very close to being a slate blue, which I'd love to play with if it would look okay :)

Other items you might buy combine blue with blue-green - this might work and brighten an eating area - is anything there as dark as these legs are?

Love it! It even looks like there's some darker threads to bring in the charcoal color.

Good idea! I could always pick up cheap pillows at the store in a red color and see if they fit well. It's a family room so not formal at all! It'll be the room where we spend most of our time watching tv, relaxing etc.

Those blues are too bright for the fabric if the fabric is reading true. Here is a board with the blue tone from the fabric , which is really a gray with blue undertone it appears. mixed into it.

As far as black, it can easily be incorporated and need not be charcoal. You need there contrast.

if classic way you use black I wouldn't add a bright blue ...but for family room I can see a loose palette...here I come home goods. ;)

None of photo totally applies - but Mist color for paint / medium or indigo blue chairs and neutral sofa / your pillow fabric? If you're not moved yet.... talk? :)

"As expected, the pairing does conjure up a seaside feel, but to keep that subtle the owners have steered the design away from the informality of classic coastal style // and gone for polished rather than driftwood or sun-bleached timber. Symmetry is frequently a shortcut to a more formal style, too – note, here, the lamps, cushion arrangements and matching armchairs."
