Black vs gold bathroom sink faucet?

Okay sorry this is a follow up post to a recent post. Everything in the photos have been purchased EXCEPT for the faucet (so don't tell me you hate anything I already bought it's too late LOL). I cannot for the life of me decide on the black faucet or the gold. Do I go full on matchy-matchy with the gold faucet or can I break it up with the matte black? I need to order today! Thanks!

Are those faucets just example colors? Will you have the three hole widespread faucet and two handles as shown on the pedestal? And also what color is the exposed plumbing for the pedestal?

Mixing plumbing fixture color usually doesn't work out well. Even though you have black in your color scheme I would recommend sticking with gold.

None of the above. Way too 2019 Fad Level 5. By 2021, this will be a “what we’re they thinking” look.

To answer your question I like the gold better. Do you know if you can get the plumbing to match? Has that come up yet?

Your choices are all beautiful with a really classic foundation (floor, pedestal, wainscot). If you tire of them in a few years the fixtures and accents are easily replaced. Please don’t be dismayed by the dissenters.

I'd do black to tie it all in! Sometimes it's hard to match the "golds" exactly so it makes sense to mix finishes.

GreenDesign please explain? I’m not a pro, but wondering what’s wrong with the gold and black? Her mirror is gold, lights gold and black, and she is thinking about a black faucet.

Anyone else who sees a problem with it, please comment?

There is nothing wrong with traditional polished brass, or raw brass (that needs polishing) fixtures. Those will stand the test of time. It’s the brushed gold look that will quickly go away, as it has reached the mass market suppliers who are reproducing it in all manner of low quality choices. When just Kohler was the only source 15 years ago, it was assured quality, and an unpopular, uncommon choice.

The black fixtures? That’s a 3 minute fad, as black fixtures and any water is spotty to downright gross encrusted in mineral deposits. The cheap ones peel and scratch too. Enough said.

The patterned flooring is a repeat of 1890’s. 1930’s, and 1970’s design inspiration. It will cycle in and out. It’s enjoyed about 10 years of popularity now, and that is pretty long lived for a fad these days. It too will be considered “so 2015” in a few years. Just like the 70’s “Mediterranean” patterned tile was considered anathema in the 90’s.

I have the black faucet you are showing, except in bronze, and I am not happy with the style in my bathroom. Let me explain:

We have hard water and it shows spots, especially in the troth. Also, it “grosses” me out that dust and germs gets onto the troth and then water comes out over it.

Now ... am I a clean freak? No, but this is something that I notice.

I’m not a pro, but I do think the black looks better with your other black and gold elements. However, the style you are looking at does not really go with the pedestal sink. I’m not a fan of pedestal sinks unless it is necessary due to the period of the home.

Styles change, I get it. I have two pretty neutral full baths (grays/whites/chrome). This is a 27 ft powder room, trying to do something fun. I don't live in the past or future, so I'm decorating for 2019. Black and white is pretty timeless if you ask me. Fixtures Can be changed. And it's definitely personal taste for everyone, I don't like the shiny gold look myself. I agree it's hard to match the golds if you're not buying at the same place (mirror and accessories are all west elm so that's easy) - the faucet is my concern.

Barbara - I ordered the 3 hole sink, they sent a single hole. It's a pain to return honestly so I'm trying to now work with a single hole!

its also sort of a vintage vibe so I'm not sure what style or color to really go with for the faucet! That is not my wainscoting, but we are doing white wainscoting, black paint on the upper walls and white Shiplap on the ceiling. In case that helps anyone visualize!

    Thanks for helpful advice!

    Thanks for your response, GreenDesign.

One more thing about your lights: I am at a phase in my life that I do not want any unnecessary chores unless it is to care for something I love. I would not be so attached to the black lamp shades that I would not mind having to dust and clean them. They would show dust way too quickly for me. I do have things in my life I don’t mind taking care of because I love them - bathroom lights don’t fall into that category!

Definitely! I am totally open to a non-open spout! Just mostly concerned with, can I do a matte black faucet with the gold mirror, gold toilet holder and gold towel hook (which I already have)!

    Thank you!

With that tile absolutely. Also, you could do black for sconces/vanity light.

Oh wait! You already bought the lights! I like them - I’m just saying I would not want to clean them (I get no help with chores around here lol).

I think the black matte would look better with your colors, in that style if you don’t mind the troth issues. If you do mind the troth issues, another simple style.

I like matte black to tie in the lamps and flooring. But I’m also not a huge fan of too much gold; it starts to feel a bit gaudy to me if it gets overwhelming.

Thanks Cindy! No I didn't buy the sconces! Just the floor, mirror, toilet tissue holder and towel holder :-) We only have an overhead recessed light in there!

Barbara, And that is a very good question! If I do a black faucet, i assuming I need black plumbing for the back of the sink, eeek!

We are doing pedestal because of the size of the bathroom, it's TINY. The house was built in 1927.

    Thanks!

My final answer after you said you didn’t buy the black sconces: buy the gold since the walls will be black. You can change down the line if you don’t like it.

I think you really can go either way. If you are doing walls black above and white below I would probably chose to repeat the gold (bc that will be a lot of black). But either will be beautiful.

As I looked online for other faucets in black (not trough) I noticed that it seems to limit your choices to more modern ones. Something to think about.

I have black hardware in my kitchen and the showing dirt and spots thing doesn’t bother me, I want to know so I can keep it clean! After two years the finish has started to wear though (not a cheap brand, just the nature of the finish). If still do it again and in fact have ordered back up hardware in the same style for the ones that get most use.

    Thank you all!!

I can see why chrome is the easiest answer - it's much more work to be trendy lol.

The faucets I found above are on Wayfair!

We are just starting the process and are considering a black or brass faucet for the powder as well. The owner of the local plumbing supply store we are working with warned us that the black would show water spots but that it would be easier to maintain if you keep it waxed. I personally would not put it in a high use spot but the powder seems reasonable for me. I like the gooseneck. As for style, I'm no expert but I think it varies depending on your location. Mediterranean never goes out of style in the West. Although contemporary interiors are really popular, I'm noticing more eclectic design and more mixing of finishes and styles. Do what you like and enjoy it!

There are a lot of poor quality illegal to use import faucets floating around. Better check out any potential choice with Starcraft’s review site. If it’s a brand that isn’t listed, you can be certain that it’s no name Chinese garbage. http://starcraftcustombuilders.com/sources.faucets2.htm

Agreed, Samantha. We are living in 2019 - styles change it's hard to keep up. I'm not renovating in the year 2030 lol. Thank you for those who provided helpful answers! We stuck with all gold and I will update with before and after pictures - it's almost done! :)

Guys! They just made a painting mistake (wainscoting was supposed to be white but he did the entire wall black)...but we think we kind of love it? I need to decide to have him fix it or keep it ahhhhh help! It's matte finish but it's still drying so it looks shiny. Ceiling is white (shiplap) and the toilet and sink are white. Definitely a more dramatic look than I was thinking but....?

No idea what happened to the other half of my comment....

If you like the all black I would consider painting the white trim in black as well but in a higher sheen for contrast and depth. The current look is a little jarring. Not a pro.

I really don’t like the white trim being called out as a pattern - your painter made a mistake and needs to fix it. You need the whole wainscot white in order to create a clean looking visual break with the floor pattern.

While gold and black are trending right now, they have fast become the new standard for classic home finishes. Both finishes are an update on traditional designs, and will last generations. They are also highly interchangeable! Check out our Top 9 Trends for the Master Bathroom in 2021 for more info on these stunning finishes!
