Help for my Family Room Needed Desperately

I have been staring at this family room for 14 years and cannot figure out the best way to update it. We need the wood burning insert in the fireplace for warmth, so that has to stay. The hexagonal "bar" across from the fireplace is under the stairs, but I need to get rid of that horrible shape and do something with the space. Any ideas? It's beyond time to update. Thanks!

You could paint the wall the same color as your built ins and change out the fireplace to a new linear model.

A nice, properly sized rug will go along way towards completing the space.

Thank you so much for all your comments! Yes, I know the rug is an issue - the dogs ruined it so I haven't replaced it - I'm afraid they will just chew up a new one.

Love the linear fireplace - I hadn't seen that. But, does it dominate the room? And would it provide warmth?

The bar - I know, it's terrible! If I lose the case work but keep the shape will that help enough?

Is the wainscoting and chair rail dated? I see so much board/batten/beadboard online that I wasn't sure.

Do you have a gas hookup for the FP? The linear FP can be gas or electric. Both provide heat

Is the hexagonal shape a reflection of the slope of the stairs on one side? I think I'd rather see the full angle, with no casing at all, than this odd approach -- the cabinetry doesn't require anything more than a drywall niche, just like in a kitchen or anywhere else.

Alternatively, you could square off the space at whatever height is required, and add a painting or mirror (or even a false cupboard) above to make up the difference if it feels low.

Wow, thanks for the ideas. I actually love the idea of the false cupboard!

The shape is reflective of the slope of the stairs, much like in the 4th picture. And I also think there is a duct running under the "bar" as well, judging by the vent next to it (facing, on the right) and that there seems to be a "false bottom" on the bar cabinet.

I would get rid of the sink and countertop, and put in a new solid countertop. You could also add a shelf above the counter. Or add custom cupboard doors to the upper portion for completely enclosed storage. You can update the fireplace area by removing some of your smaller items on the shelves and using fewer, larger pieces. You could also paint the backs of the shelves, or use adhesive wallpaper, in a deeper color to add some depth and interest. Maybe a green or blue from your larger artwork. Remove the smaller art on the right side of your mantle.

You have a very nice space with a great layout. I agree about the bar area from other comments.

    For the fireplace wall:

The bookshelves are full of similar sized items. I recommend shopping your house and mixing things up with larger books, a big bowl, small art, only a few cherished photos. Take everything out & play with the items. It’ll be a work in progress and can change with the seasons or your mood. Rotate the items as you like.

The landscape painting is beautiful. There’s a small piece near it that looks out of place on the mantle. Can it fit somewhere else? Maybe on the bookshelf?

I agree a rug would do wonders for the space. Tightly woven rug could work but you know your dogs ;). Some throw pillows would be nice. Maybe a plant if your dogs would leave it be.

I'd also consider getting a much larger square coffee table instead of the small rectangular

one you have currently to tie the couch and chair seating together and make it more cohesive.

Yes, that's a great idea! I appreciate all of your comments! I'm furiously taking notes and looking online for sources. I've been too close to this for so long and so overwhelmed that I've been "frozen" - glad for all your input to help me get moving on this project.
