Once it's covered in drywall and the reno is done and you've moved in, you won't notice it anymore.

During renos, people get fixated on details that you'd never notice if you just walked into a fully completed house.

Throw money at it. That makes anything work.

I agreed that its not a big issue. Wrap it with drywall and forget it. If there are ceiling lights, it might help to put one on each side of it to avoid shadows. If you really want to hide it add more of them.

It looks like the contractor is able to do what Carter advised. The beam was unsightly and an issue to look at everyday as a reminder of poor planning. Thanks for the practical information, Mr. Carter. I very much appreciate being able to post and get several people’s opinions. I’ll post the finished product.

Sometimes one beam looks out of place, but four beams creates interest. Perhaps that concept can be applied here.

Yes, but the time to do something was back when framing started.

The support beam doesn't bother me nearly as much as the hallway appearing to be narrowed down...and that is what you will notice a lot more than the beam...and more so if/ when you are able to remove the beam.

Hoping that it is just the camera angle that makes it look like the hall funnels down in width.

It's the camera lens distorting architectural distance. It's a common occurance with camera/fixed lens designed for outdoor photos at a middle distance.

Is this an addition to a post-and-beam home? If so, why not celebrate the posts and beams rather than hide them?

No it isn’t, but that would be lovely. It’s just a beam they didn’t consider when drawing up the plans and not a support beam after all.
