Top Ten Favorite Daylilies of 2019

last modified: 6 years ago

What were your Top Ten favorites from this season - the ones you loved the most?

Here are mine:

Stenciled Infusion - Always a good opener, many days of beautiful clumps, and set a lot of pods this season.

Lillian's Thin Ice provided many days of beautiful clumps. I love the cascading form of this UF.

Se#y Samantha and Bubblegum Delicious were my favorite pinks. Seexy Samantha was a beautiful clump this season that set nearly every pod I tried. Bubblegum Delicious won't set pods, but I love that popcorn looking white/cream edge on it. It's pollen was used on every pink. Both had 30 inch scapes this season.

Buddy's Red Head was my favorite red, and a super pod hussy again.

Blazing Saddles is always a favorite, and now that it's at clump strength even more so.

Sweet Child of Mine - Wonderful clump with a color that could be seen from far away.

The Ultimate Sacrifice - Beautiful color, form, and a terrifiic parent again this year.

White Tooth was an excellent pod setter and a terrific rebloomer this season.

Two Sues - Outstanding at clump strength and a nice rebloomer in July and August.

Runners-Up

Abilene Lillian

August Frost

Nice selection, Debra. Of these, I really like [color and form] Lillian's Thin Ice, Buddy's Red Head, Sweet Child of Mine, August Frost. Two Sues would be the next tier.

It was a great bloom season this year for many reasons: I did not have to water as we had ample rain, my neighbors cut down the 12 to 15 foot high row of arborvitae that shaded my garden in my backyard and it was generally not to hot.

FRIEDA ALLEN JERRELL: I just love the look of this one and it blooms for a long time.

SITTING COOL: A wonderful pastel from Bud Bennett. The blooms are perfect everyday.

SPACECOAST THORNY DEVIL: The teeth on this one are fantastic. Best year ever for it and was consistent in performance day after day and it is still blooming.

MYSTERY OF THE AGES: This has been the model of consistency as well. Every bloom has been perfect. No splotching at all. The scape is wonderful and it has sent up 2 scapes per fan.

FAST PLEASURE: I love the richness of the color on this one.

WILD CHERRY WINE: Need I say more.

SUPERMODEL: This is a bloom machine and every bloom is perfect day in and day out. Increases quickly.

OUR FRIEND OLIN: Flat and ruffled and huge. Love it love it love it.

PROPER STRANGER: Flat and large. Love it love it love it.

TACTICAL CAT: This one just blooms its fool head off. I used this one alot this year spreading pollen and setting pods.

    Honorable mentions:

    HOT SEAT

    29 Flags Over Conway

As I always say, ask me next week and it might change ever so slightly.

Sherry, I especially like Tall Dark Stranger and Magic Dancer.

Maryl, PALMETTO PRIDE is my favorite of these.

David, Wild Cherry Wine and 29 Flags over Conway are my favorites.

My favorites are somewhat limited to what I could regularly see, which is part of 2 beds out the window and out front. I did have an appreciation for some different ones this year because of this, not a bad thing.

Note: had to resize many of these to get them to post. Once resized, the posted instantly.

Seedlings A & B [Bittersweet Holiday x Kent's Favorite Two] were so bright they stood out easily from any distance.

Bombay Silk [left] amazed me daily and love this picture with Grape Velvet.

    Carmen Renee

    Kirsten's Corsage-

    Coral Majority bloomed like crazy

North Wind Dancer, long season and photographed well, so may days I really enjoyed the photo that Janelle took.

No more will post. Will try below.

    So many lovelies here.

Debra, I really like the look of White Tooth. I might have to try that one even though we shy away from Peat daylilies, which have not proven to be hardy enough here.

Maryl, Penny Pinsley catches my eye. I like the small doubles. Orchids and Gold is certainly a lovely bloom. It lived here for many years, but didn't thrive so we sent it to a friend in the south this season.

David, as usual I love that Wild Cherry Wine. Spacecoast Thorny Devil does well here and was quite nice this season.

Brad, North Wind Dancer is a favorite here. We moved ours and split the rather large clumps and its not back up to speed yet. I can't wait for it to get back to the clump. It makes such a nice display which is especially appreciated in the late garden.

It was really hard to pick just ten. I picked a group of 15 and then narrowed it down to 10. Now I am thinking of others I could have included.

These daylilies are not picked because they are great performers. Some are new and haven't proven themselves yet. They are ones I like a lot.

Forever the Optimist was planted last season and flowered for the first time this year. This is a very fancy flower from Canada so we have high hopes that it will be hardy.

Hey Soul Sister has been around for several years, but this year it outdid itself. The weather was just right to bring out the smokey mottled tones on the flower. I like this look better than the plain dark look.

Hip Hop Music isn't the best performer in the garden, but has a wonderful face. It hasn't increased much but otherwise does fine. I am a sucker for an eyed toothy--two of my favorite looks in one flower.

I love the little ones and Mary Ethel Anderson is one of my favorites. It is reblooming now.

Priscilla's Dream is an amazing little daylily. It has been in flower all summer and is just now winding down.

This is another daylily from Canada. Shirley Koch was a gift to our daughter from the hybridizer, Reggie Morgan. The flowers are large and perfect every day.

Sihir is another one from Canada. I think it is rather unique. This is its second season here and it is doing very well.

I think I had better put the last three in the next comment. I don't want to lose this whole post.

This daylily actually belongs to our daughter. We were delighted when Spacecoast Alpha Wolf bloomed this year. It was just planted this spring. You can bet its pollen went all over the garden and a substantial quantity was frozen for later.

I can't remember when we picked up The Dentist. I think we got it for a real reasonable price. We have been very happy with it. It has also set several pods.

It was so hard to pick the last one, but I finally settled on Bodacious Bite. This has been a great performer for us. We load it down with pods every year and the next year it performs beautifully. The flowers never has a bad day--always open perfectly. It is reblooming now.

Those are my ten. Just like David said, ask me later and I will have a different group.

Maryl - I was surprised to see Rudy in your Top Ten. I really like it!

David - Mystery of the Ages and Fast Pleasure are my favorites of yours.

Brad - Wonderful form on Kristen's Corsage. Why am I not surprised that there are so many lavenders on your list? :)

Hoosier Nancy - SC Alpha Wolf and Hip Hop Music really grab me.

Nancy, Hey Soul Sister caught my eye today, I like its unusual look.

What happened to Spacecoast Frances Busby? I was hoping to see and surprised it hasn't been included here . I fell in love with it last year when people showed it but haven't seen it this year in anyone's posts .I would add it in a heartbeat but unfortunately it is not available here for some reason.

Brad , I love your image of Carmen Renee , will have to watch for that one here too.

Debra: Stenciled Infusion with the pencil outlined eye was one of my favorites of yours.

Sherry: Toward The Blue with it's delicate lilac colors won my heart.

David: Of the ones I don't have Frieda Allen Jerrell was a winner. Wild Cherry Wine had the best year it's ever had here. Lots of blooms.

Brad: Love the Orange Seedling. That's what I call my shade of orange!

Nancy: I like a few little ones myself and yours are delightful. They are so hard to find tho.

Hope I haven't missed anyone. Hard to believe that I'm the only one with a yellow favorite.

It is my favorite daylily color so I hope someone else out there has at least one........Maryl

Heather - I posted a couple of photos of SC Frances Busby this season, One was a clump shot with 14 blooms. For the first time ever in seven years, it didn't rebloom. It would be in my top 25, but not Top 10 this year because of not reblooming.

    Debra

Maryl , I have so many favourite yellow daylilies and almost all are very tall. Not sure I should be posting this here but I hope the others will forgive me if I shouldn;t have

Some of my fav's are #1 Sears Tower (a Hanson) a 72 inch tall very robust bright lemon yellow tailored bloom # 2 Heavenly Dancing Fairies (a 52 inch tall 5 inch star shaped bloom) and #3 Reach for the Heavens 68 inches tall (more of a school bus yellow 8.5 inch bloom ) both by Gossard . But then there is Capacity for Wonder, Carved Pumpkin Pie, Frou Frou, Forestlake Lemon Lace , Buttercream ,Limited Edition , Jack and the Beanstalk , Big Bird and Big Birds Friend , Peewee's Big Adventure etc . Here are some images of a few of them

these are shorter but no less beautiful .

Hard to choose just one or two that I love . I love each and every one for different reasons.

Debra, not sure how I missed seeing it . I will have to search the posts to find it . It is such a spectacular daylily. Sorry to hear it didn't rebloom for you this y ear but how blessed you are to have it . No doubt it is even more spectacular in person ( can you say that about a plant ??????)

Well, no sense in posting what has already been posted, such as Two Sues, Wild Cherry Wine, Coral Majority, or Butter Cream. Here are by no means the top 10, but just some I may, or may have not, featured.

Passion's Promise was much better budded and a standout, even if this sun shot is a bit garish in its gleam (looks like earlier in the morning).

How many mornings wasn't I drawn to Magic Lace. Perhaps the moisture boost made the flowers larger than usual.

Elizabeth Trotter couldn't be missed, whether on initial or rebloom. Why isn't this cultivar better distributed? If it isn't patterns or teeth, a cultivar gets lost.

Abraham Lincoln provided weeks of intriguing lavender blend blooms.

The old Stamile pinks were a joy almost every morning. Darlington County

God Save the Queen many a morning was hard to pass by.

Also Known As, a bonus, has been more interesting so far than the expensive intro I bought.
Mary Frances Ragain was alluring in the mid-late garden.

Caribbean Whipped Cream glowed and dominated its area, despite its relatively short stature.
Morning Mood provided picture after picture.

    I ran out of space.

Mantis, i really love Morning Mood. great color, eye and form.

Mantis, Passion's Promise brings a smile to my face not only for its name but what a cheerful bloom. I love it ! and I agree with Brad on his comments on Morning Mood . How tall is MM by the way?

You mention in your post " old Stamile daylilies" . Did he hybridize elsewhere other than Florida when he started out do you know ? And anyone know what year "old" Stamile cultivars became new Florida ones. I ask because I have tried to grow some Stamile's but more recent intros and they sure do not like it here. But Mantis you are in Ohio so similar growing conditions to me ( we are not that far from each other ) so I am wondering what the cut off time was between old and new so I can look for "old " Stamiles that just might do well here .

    last modified: 6 years ago

Heather - The Stamiles originallly lived and hybridized in Long Island, NY. They moved to Florida some time in the early 90s, taking their promising northern-bred seedlings to Floyd Cove, FL.

    Debra

Now the Stamile's live in California.

    David

More recent Stamiles are notorious for not doing well in the North. It started about 10 years ago. Munson predicted that all the inbreeding of evergreens in Florida would increasingly produce tender blooms for northern regions. Among the pinks here are Down Home (so reliable), Darlington County (welcome in the earlier garden), Seminole Wind, Corinthian Pink, Blue Pink Beauty, Lavender Dusk. All wonderful this year, and usually other years too. Morning Mood is fairly short. (around 20-23). It was especially nice this year. Another one not pictured is Duel Zone, a nice later one.

God Save the Queen is an evergreen that seems to do well for you. It did better for me in a pot than it does in the ground. Perhaps I need to move it to another spot. There must be something about the Elizabeth Trotter daylily that I'm not seeing. Having met the lovely and vivacious person, Elizabeth Trotter, who is our AHS registrar, I would expect a rounder, prettier one. I looked up that stats and it is a huge bloom, but the color descrption is weird: an orange raspberry blend? The photos in the NGA database show a rounder bloom, and darker in color than yours. Do you have any other photos of it you could share? I always love those Morning Mood photos!

Heather - Here are couple of photos of Spacecoast Francis Busby from this season.

    Last bloom

Spacecoast Francis Busby had multiple days with 14 blooms this season. Here it is with River City Pier Surfer.

Pictures don't capture well the nuances and raspberry tones. It can also vary. I assume that she chose the flower for her namesake. It is very round. Has lots of texture.

God Save the Queen is an excellent grower here.

Debra: I loved your comment about the REAL Elizabeth Trotter and that her daylily should be "rounder and prettier". It would be interesting to know how others would feel about what a daylily named after them should look like...........Mantis: I really like the dynamic colors on Passions Promise. Will be looking that one up........Signet: Thanks for the yellow fix. Like rays of sunshine in a field of flowers..............Maryl

Yes, it is interesting to imagine what one's namesake should look like. I wonder too how one feels when one's daylily turns out not to perform that well and people comment on the poor performance.

The only pictures of Elizabeth Trotter online are those of the hybridizer. It is hardly surprising that an AHS pic should look more vivid. Does anyone take those pics without a grain of salt? Elizabeth Trotter is a very large flower. It is noticed, but it also has subtle shadings, and I suspect that is what ET liked.

Mantis - Your other photos of Eizabeth Trotter the daylily do look rounder, more ruffled, and more vivid. I'm sure she did pick that one to carry her name. The Rices also named one after her husband, Greg, and her mother, Martha Chamberlain.
