Can you help me pick color and accessories?

My apartments living room is mostly finished, but it's very neutral in tone, and I felt it needed color. I was thinking maybe a pale teal or aqua accent wall behind the TV or couch, as well as putting a plant to replace the vases in the corner.

I'm also looking for pillows for the chair and sofa and something for the coffee table. The theme is mid-century modern.

What do you guys think?

Love the pillows on that second one, grover!

To blend and strengthen your hero pictures, grover's usual is good! The pillows have graphic shapes, and outlines - are they like your art in that way? :)

Your walls almost appear to be a very pale green. I would add pillows in a fresh green, with a green plant on the coffee table.

Wow guys, thanks so much! Thanks for taking the time to edit my pics grover. I didn't know mid-century modern was a style. Thanks for educating me. I was actually looking at nesting tables before I saw your post, and think that's what I'll probably go with. I love both pictures, but am drawn more to the first one with the most color. My apartment is relentlessly beige(beige walls, beige carpeting) and having more color in that space really cheers me up.

Where did you get those glass birds? I want those(or something like them) for the coffee table

How about removable wallpaper for the accent wall? In the shopping section of Houzz type in removable wallpaper and then filter for mid century.

David, the glass birds are here. Only two of them left, but they're on sale right now.

Just a tip (from my personal philosophy) when looking for accessories: stay out of Hobby Lobby and places where they have miles and miles of the same mass produced crap. Instead, look for the unique on your travels, in import shops, even thrift stores to find the interesting piece that no one else will have.

Oooh nice! I didn't even know removable wallpaper existed! My life is changed. Thanks I love this. I really wanted to do an accent wall.

Back to the heroes - beige-y and their blue? a bit squat-shaped possibly, and that it is both warm and cool: might take a bit of attention away from pillows. Might catch sunlight?? W 16" / H 25.5"

If nothing so wrong with your tv unit - try Ikea's look of removable wallpaper on front of it [even on the middle part]. Whatever the heroes would look good with. ;)

The wall with patio door has a nice view - and to one side a skinny lamp and other side can be empty.... wild idea to use a blend-with-paint wallpaper for "low-contrasting soft" to frame the patio door...if all else fits along with this much pattern....

Hey guys, thanks so much for continuing to give advice. Everdebz, I thought the desk idea to utilize more space was inspired! Love all the wallpaper ideas too.

I have this large 36'' by 54'' canvas art piece of my cities downtown that hangs in my dining room right across from my living room. I thought, "What if I switch it with the art in my living room and see what happens?" I wound up liking the result.

Now that I have this new burst of color in the living room, I thought I could use it to reinforce teal throw pillows for the couch and chair like grove suggested earlier. What do you all think?

The canvas art over the sofa is really too large. The framed prints were too, but they had a logic to them since they covered the whole wall. If you want to keep the canvas over the sofa, at least center the sofa underneath it, or center it over the sofa.

    David Hennebach thanked groveraxle

That's an odd shade of teal, more green than blue.

You're right grove, my mistake. Maybe aquamarine? I do love the color. Thanks for the advice! I've centered the sofa under the art more.

David, I'm going to come back to this room. Something about it is leaving me a little meh. It needs a bold stroke of some kind; I just haven't quite figured out what that is.

Thanks, I feel the same way. That's why I brought it here.

wonder if 3 pictures are so wide that it's 'off' - possible good arrangement on tv wall? and complementing canvas art over seating...

could an unusual arrangement work with informality of 1 picture showing on the top half [popping up into view so to speak] asymmetrical...

I really liked the larger art in your dining area. It was just the right size for the space, and the color looked better with the white chairs. Your set of three prints would look fine over the sofa if you hang them lower and closer together, centered with the sofa, not the wall. I think the higher contrast (light and dark) works well there. Then you could add either blue or red pillows with some pattern, taken from the colors in the prints.

Hi everdebs, Thanks for commenting. My goal was simply to create a mid-century modern style with some colorful, playful pieces thrown in(like the art). Wasn't going for masculine or feminine.

If you want to - sum up what type items you want to be colorful ... at this point in the process you want "regular" store bought - but what items I guess idk.

I love the curtains! I never thought about using the curtains for color. The blue would come in really handy for that. I'll seriously consider those.

I took peoples advice, and switched back the hero art to my living room, and centered them above the couch. Then I ordered some colorful glass birds who another person on here suggest to me, whose colors also mirror the color in the art.

I've been thinking about pillows most of all since I think I could get a lot of color into the space with them. I'm looking for blue or red pillows with some pattern, taken from the colors in the prints, as suggested by an another person on here. I'd like the pillows to be more modern than mid century though.

Based on the suggestions I'm getting, most think I'm going for full on mid-century, but I've got all the mid-century I want, and now I'm just looking to finish out with modern.

I know. I put the aqua art above the sofa, but people advised against it, so I've been changing things up since then, but haven't posted about it until now. Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the advice! I love the curtains.

For pillows, I would keep it simple and just use one lumber pillow on the sofa. Something with some texture, pattern, and color.

On your coffee table, add one more item to the glass pieces. Maybe a small potted green plant, or a taller clear vase with a branch, or place the glass items on a round tray. Three is a better grouping of items than just two.

    Hey guys,

Just an update. I hired an interior decorator to redo the space. Not because your suggestions weren't good enough, they were amazing! I simply decided after the fact that I wanted to start from scratch, and felt having a designated person do it would speed up the process.

The decorator gave me two different designs, and I'm moving forward with design two. I just wanted to thank everyone one of you again for helping me, and show y'all how it turned out.

You guys helped show me what I really wanted, and I wouldn't have gotten to this place with my living room otherwise, so thank you!

    Love from Texas,

    -David

Both designs are fine, but don't feel like you need to replace all your items for new ones. Your current sofa, chair, media console, floor lamp and table lamp would still work well in either of these designs. You can add the new elements to your existing ones.

Hope working with this decorator meets all your needs. (I hired decorators a few times for my home dilemmas; quite helpful.) I notice the renditions have no window treatments. Is this something you're eliminating?

Hi Tartanmeup. The decorator I used doesn't do window treatments. That's why the designs don't include them.
