I 'll say it- I miss Spiegel

Anyone else?I remember in the days before the web, or maybe before the shopping aspect really caught on, how I would wait for the new Spiegel catalogue and just study it for hours. I need new bedding to replace a comforter set I purchased from Spiegel pretty sure it was 28 years ago. I loved the set -even got balloon shades tp match and I tell you it was gorgeous. I loved it. I wore fine over time. It's just seen better days and I don't even know where to look. Looking online somehow is not working for me. I got to TJM and those stores to see in person but the selection is pretty poor.

Anyone else miss Spiegel like I do?

How's that for nostalgia.

I remember that catalogue too. If you're looking for beautiful bed linens, you might consider Garnet Hill.

I miss it too. Still use a tote bag that was a free with purchase item

I used to work down the street from a Spiegel retail outlet store, and I went there often. I found a lot of great deals on clothes at that store. Seems like ages ago (it must've been the very early 90s), and I had not even thought of Spiegel in years until today. :-)

I don't know that I exactly miss it, but did get some great bedding there over the years. I bought a gorgeous, handmade in India quilt there in the 1970's to hang on a large wall. I still have it and it's in great shape and still gorgeous!

Oh wow! - what a throw back. Loved getting my Spiegel catalog. What a fun trip down memory lane.

I never saw a Spiegel catalogue, but I recognize the name. We used to have a wonderful family-owned chain of linen stores where you could buy terrific coordinating bedding and draperies. They even had access to the fabrics so you could have custom pieces made. I'm still using the last coverlet and shams that I bought from them. I was so sad to see them close down after the patriarch died and none of the adult children were interested in carrying on the business.

I don't have any recommendations for places to buy coordinating bedding. I like some of the patterns from Pottery Barn, but they cut their queen-sized covers skimpily and call them full/queen. I hate that! I've been disappointed with Garnet Hill's and Delorme's quality. Sometimes, I think it's easier to find fabrics you like and have everything custom-made.

I got a Montgomery Wards catalog in the mail yesterday! Well, it was more like a Pottery Barn or Garnet Hill catalog, not a big thick one. I thought Mont.Wards was no longer.

Try The Company Store, or Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware

Oly, I still have a quilt on the wall from Spiegel and get compliments on it all the time. It's beautiful.

I bought a couple lamps and a wool rug from Spiegel. Still have all of them.

Here is a source for nicer bedding sets. They have been around for a long time. They will even customize.

I remember my mother getting the Spiegel catalog, and in the winter version, I would see lots of winter clothes that I liked a lot (especially sweaters), but where I lived in Texas was too hot, even in winter, to wear most of the Spiegel winter clothes. Still I liked them and wanted to wear them, even though they were not practical. I did have a collection of sweaters that I would wear to school in the morning, but by afternoon I could no longer wear them comfortably.

I used to buy so many things from Spiegel. From rugs to bathing suits! I think it was the 80's when I bought a box of beautiful Christmas card's that had "Believe" on the front. Now "Believe" is everywhere, but not back then. Spiegel was a trendsetter, IMO.

Love reading that so many of you also had such good experiences with them. I looked at a few of the sites recommended and while they are all lovely, they just can't hold compete with my memory of beloved Spiegel. I don't know what it is about looking on the internet as I would think it would be superior to printed paper but for some things, I just really miss the catalogue. Editing to add---- while Spiegel was not cheap I don't think it was as pricey as some of the alternatives suggested, at least to my recollection. I think it was slightly higher than run of the mill but obviously so much better.

So impressive that some of those items have such longevity.

    sigh.

I think we bought a lot from Spiegel because this was pre internet days and the plethora of alternatives today didn't exist. For the most part, their quality was good some things better than others and they had coupons and sales! I still have quite a few things around the house from them, including my bowl lift KA mixer.

The specialness of the fall catalog, though, my mother and I would study that thing!

I miss using the yellow pages to find phone numbers.

Stephanie, it's so much easier using the internet. Takes a fraction of the time.

I want to answer that, but don’t want to derail the thread!!

Oh, I do too! I used to love getting their catalog ... I bought so much from them. I still have some really pretty christmas decorations I bought from the catalog.

Not home decor related, but I still have a tunic from them that I use as jammies. It must be almost 30 years old and still in decent shape!!

I don’t think I ever got Spiegel, but I remember getting the Sears Wish Book. I spent hours looking at that and dog earring the pages. Now I am inundated with catalogs. I still, peruse some of them but if I order, I do it online.

Miss the big catalog - esp after they went upscale in the late 80's

Made out like a bandit at their outlet stores - and did even better at the outlet store outlet

I never used Speigel, but I just miss shopping of old...the way it once used to be! I miss Sears, we no longer have any Sears stores by us anymore. I miss looking at the old catalogs we used to get. I don't find web searching to be very handy at all. Nothing like flipping through pages of lovely things to buy!

We LOVED shopping from them. Living in a very small town meant that retail options were very limited. It was our outlet to the world.

I did buy some decorative items from Spiegel in the 80’s and 90’s, but my most vivid memory of Spiegel is of my mom in the 60’s being over the moon when she received a pair of gray suede pumps she had ordered. Hadn’t thought about Spiegel or that memory in years, but as soon as I saw the thread, my mom and those gray pumps popped right up. Thanks!
