Beige Box of a craft room needs a re-do

I am fortunate to have an extra bedroom to use as a craft room. I’d love to re-decorate it to be more colorful and attractive, and maybe as a space where I could go to just relax and read a book as well.

I’d like to “start over”, but don’t have a huge budget, so I’d keep The white ikea sewing table since it works really well for me and I think it’s ok looking, once get it cleaned off and organized....
I’d like to get a white bookshelf and ditch the dark colored one. And maybe a nice chair somewhere.

Open to changing the drapes, but I do like the ones I have, and I made them myself. Maybe I can improve them somehow. They’re not super colorful but maybe that’s ok.

The corner where the mini table and chair live is under-utilized.

I need some attractive lighting options and more colorful art for sure.

I’d like to paint the walls to something more colorful. The way to wall carpet is new and it’s a gray with green undertones.

I’ve looked at a lot of craft room inspiration pictures, but many of them feature these big beautiful built in cabinets, which are not in my budget. So it’s hard to see the big picture going from that to what I can do in my space. Here are some pictures of my room:

I am stumped for where to start, I could use a little help choosing pieces and colors so that everything is cohesive and nice looking once I am finished!

I think the room would be a soothing place to be if you painted it the lavender color from the drapes. If you want it more lively, use the green. Just to try some ideas, remove the items in that corner left of the door, and bring your bookcase over to that location. Could you paint it to match the sewing table? Hang a bright piece of art above it. Do you have a sleeve board or a small table top ironing board? That might be easier to deal with than having the full ironing board up all the time. For pressing out seams it might work just as well. Keep the big board in the closet for times when you need the larger ironing surface. Bring any kind of small chair in from another room and put in in the corner by the window with your floor lamp. Shop 2nd hand furniture shops for a new lamp and the right reading or mending chair. Do you have a ceiling fixture, or is the lamp your only light in here? Maybe you need a lamp in the corner of the sewing table behind the machine, which I'm sure has its own light.

I was thinking of Benjamin Moore Beach Plum for a wall color. I'll have to get a paint chip and see how it looks with the drapes. The purple in the drapes might be a little darker than this.

I do have a small table top ironing board. The regular one only needs to be out for ironing big things.

The only light in the room comes from the floor lamp. It is in it's current location because that is where the lights witch outlet is located. I do agree, a lamp in the corner where the bookshelf currently is would work better. I can always put a small lamp on top of the bookshelf if I move it where the floor lamp currently is. And, yes I used to have a lamp in the corner behind the sewing machine, but I did not like it, so it was removed. I'll have to find something better. Let me shuffle some things around.

I'm able to spend a few hundred dollars ($300-400 max) to make this work. So I'll have to choose pieces carefully. :)

I've started looking at artwork, and at the risk of looking like a crazy cat lady (ha!), these two are speaking to me:

Art is a personal choice. It can be as wide as 75% of the bookcase width and hung 5" above it. How big are those? You may can go for something larger.

I'll have to measure the bookshelf and figure out what size will work. I will look into painting it white as well. But I'm more inclined to replace it with something a little nicer if I can find one secondhand. I have a feeling I could do with something wider and slightly less tall. I'll have a better idea later this evening when I get a chance to move things and measure.

Those two art pieces come in multiple sizes, they can come in quite large sizes, and it also depends which frame I select as well. I'll have a better idea of what size to look for later this evening. Thanks for helping me start to think things through :)

Here's a similar look to what you'd probably like, I think it's great.

Notice the pops of purple and greens so your drapes would work with this.

Yayagal, yes, I like that very much :) Thanks for sharing!

Here's another view of it. See that she added a lining in purple plus a few plants. Love the sewing machine on top of the wonderful cabinet for files.

Oooh, the purple lining is a nice touch. It's all in the details.

I wonder if I have any of my drapery fabric left to make a pillow! I'll have to check!

I think art rooms and craft rooms should be on the more neutral side so when you're working with color, the wall color doesn't change the colors you're using.

To explain what I mean, all the purple squares in the middle of each larger square is the exact same color. Notice how the surrounding color changes the purple in the center?

I suggest you instead put up some favorite artwork and use pillows, etc to add color and instead keep the walls a neutral color. My studio where I am an artist and also do needlepoint is a light neutral color. I added color with my red couch (the corner can be seen in the bottom right) and eventually I'll be hanging some favorite artworks. It literally is the only room in my house that is neutral in feel.

cpartist, oh, yes, I do see what you mean about the purple looking different. When I picked out paint for my foyer a while back, I had considered a color that I still think about today, Benjamin Moore Angelica. I'll have to dig up a paint chip and see how it looks with the carpet. It's definitely more neutral than beach plum!

Alrighty, I moved some stuff around. I definitely like a chair and a floor lamp in the corner next to the window. So I’m on the hunt for a chair.

I think I do want a bookshelf that is not as tall, and wider than the one I have now. Here is the one I have now in it’s new spot:

The wall where the bookshelf is now is 62” long, and my current bookshelf is 30” wide.

Mockup1: This would blow my budget, but I love this chair and lamp. Maybe I need to do this in phases. I don't know how to try different wall colors...

Mockup2: My idea for a different bookshelf and art. I'd fill the bookshelf with fabric sorted by color instead of books.

I replaced my bookshelf with the one in the mockup. I'm working on styling it now. I'm putting all my fabric on mini bolts, then will sort by color, and incorporate some other decorative pieces.

The next piece I'd like to buy is a floor lamp. Still looking at options. The one in my mockup I really like, but not sure it goes with the drapes.

I totally bought the purple cat picture too. On it's way! :)
