what color kitchen cabinets should I go with?

Currently renovating my coop. We took down the wall separating the kitchen from the living room to give it an open look. The kitchen is 6’6x14’9. We have dark hardwood floors in the living room, which I’ll attach a picture of. I’ll also attach a picture of the flooring we plan on putting in the kitchen. We’ve made lots of decisions but one thing we’re torn on is if we want grey or navy cabinets base cabinets with white upper cabinets and white counter top. I’ll attach pictures of both shades we really like. I know it’s hard without a picture of the living room going into the kitchen, hopefully the flooring pictures will help. I’ve gotten great advice on here in the past just looking for others recommendations. Thank you!

If doing an island. Navy Island with lighter color on perimeter will make room look brighter & bigger.

With the floor choice & if no island & plan on selling 10 years or so, I lean more towards neutral light color cabinets to appeal to the masses then decorate with pops of color as trends change. I love navy & white togeather. But I show a lot of homes & sometimes a too distinct color can shy away buyers. The grey you posted is attractive.

If forever home, whatever you adore.

You have dark hardwood in the living room. Don't mix in a fake light colored wood tile with real hardwood. They don't work together. Get a tile that looks like tile.

Which do you love the most? Or are you picking one or the other because it's the current trend and you've been seeing it everywhere?

If it's the first, that's the one you pick. If it's the second, start over with a color YOU LOVE.

It actually doesn’t look like wood tile at all. I wish I could get a better picture of the tile. We made sure to stay away from a tile that looks like wood knowing how terrible it would look. We love both colors. We are nervous though that when we resell in a few years, since it is just a coop, that we might have trouble selling somebody on the navy cabinets.

If this isn't the kitchen you intend to die owning go white or wood. All these colors are very fun but no one but YOU will love this kitchen enough to buy it.

streamline things. paint the walls a lighter/non yellow color. Get a lighting upgrade [led's/dimmers] . A charcoal gray slate look on the floor if you don't want hardwood or bamboo or cork . Generally a resilient floor will be softer and quieter: but if tile is the option go darker with mottled shadings so cleaning doesn't consume you. Do a basic White or light streamlined kitchen....don't spend on extra finishes. Spend on clever/smart storage features. Insert some butcher block if the plan permits that. I'd seriously get the plan out in front of me and then focus on finishes. A better kitchen will give you more quality time while still there......a color featured space isn't worth that much for the extra you will spend on painted cabinets. A lightish natural maple would work with the dark floor...and place in a couple glass doors.

Can you run the same flooring through the entire space? I think having two different floors that have wood grain in an open space will look choppy. I would make the tile really different if you are set on tile.
I would go with warm white cabinets or stained maple. Those are the kitchens that other people can imagine themselves living in, so if you are planning to sell in the next five years, that should definitely be a consideration.
The picture below has a very different tile, you don’t have to go that crazy, but you can tell that the tile choice was intentional and not trying to blend with the wood.

I wish we could install hardwood and have the same exact finish unfortunately it’s too much work and too costly. Any wood imitating vinyl or laminate tiling would just look tacky in my opinion.

    Hi, DLap,

Good job of asking others opinions to help find a color for now & for selling down the road.

Is there going to be an island?

If so, then that's the safer place to can get creative & fun with navy cabinets. It's easier to adjust an island for selling than a whole kitchen, IF it is brought up when listing home.

I suggest keeping floor the same through an open concept kitchen. Because it creates flow & gives illusion the space is bigger.

If change flooring, please do flooring under the island, so if buyer does not like layout, no problem, take it out, floor is under. At least buy enough left over material to do patch work under whole island & other areas later. It will cost more now, however BIG savings if need to do pathwork later. I know a few home owners who needed patch work due to water damage or changing island layout & did not have extra material. They could not find a good enough match either. Things go discontinued all the time. They had to redo whole floors again! That was $ saved in beginning, but $$$$ in end.

Neutral colors like white, off white, wood stains, for kitchen walls. Lighter colors make room look bigger & brighter & show well. In my opinion a very light greige (grey with beige) is also considered neutral, even though it is a trend, I think works. White is the safest choice for resell.

I would buy durable construction cabinets with soft close that can be painted touched up later. Avoid foil cabinets or furniture grade cabinets, because they wear bad & more than often, can not be repainted well.

    Hope that helps :)

Yes we will have an Island. Only about 4.5 feet in length. We also considered going with all white cabinets around and a navy island. I’ll attach a picture of our layout.

Thanks for posting pict of the layout. Is that the old layout or future layout? Not liking the layout that much. Sorry. Maybe there's a reason it has to be that way. Watch out for the fridge door swing clearance against (heater?) I personally rather see the fridge out of corner that is blocking sunlight & sink under window. Either way, wishing you success!

That was our plan originally as well. To have the sink by the windows. However, due to it being a coop, our options are limited as there are so many rules and regulations. The vent for the sink is directly above where it is now, and relocating it isn’t allowed. Just some of the sacrifices we had to make to be able to afford the area we wanted!

I wonder if, with that warm dark floor on the other side, making the kitchen a completely cool toned space will look off balance? Might be better to go with a warm white or light wood? You’ve already got a grey floor.

Is that the island to the right? If so I would did a run of cabinets to the right of the sink and get rid of the island so you have landing spots on both sides of sink. Make it a true galley kitchen. That run to the right could be open so there is seating on the outside if that is what you were looking for by adding the island. Where it exists now doesn’t really relate well with the space But maybe it’s the image growing me off. Seems like we are missing some critical wlements and how it relates to the other spaces.

You have a very nice classic box right now. Put that flooring and blue cabinets and you won't have that anymore. Those elements do not work well with what you have right now. If you love the current trends, great, do what you love. If you want longevity, think again.

    Hi, DLap,

I understand that coops can be a challenge.

Maybe if you post the dimensions of walls & layout, Houzzers can help you with some other ideas within the limits.

    List the limits,too,please.

    For example,

Did you mean the vent for the stove can not be changed instead of sink?

    Plumbing has to stay?

note on layout things that must stay to work around rules.

I would either do all white or all wood or ? You kitchen is a little small to do 2 toned cabinets IMO . A friend of mine did that in her condo. Her kitchen looks smaller & chopped up looking to me. I thought it looked better before her remodel, unfortunately.

I would still argue for continuing the current floor through the space. It's just too small to mix floors and have it look good, particularly given what you've invested in opening it up. I think the floor you're looking at putting in will detract, rather than add, to the value you're putting into the coop.

That said, budget is of course a reality. Given that you're looking at adding a fairly small island that's a fairly standard length, what about adding a freestanding island instead of a cabinetry island, and using the savings for he floors? IKEA and Crate and Barrel both make some islands that could be great for your space and have the look you want, particularly if paired with white perimeter cabinets.

I attached the layout and dimensions. The gas line has to stay, as well as the plumbing for the sink. We were able to extend the plumbing slightly so that you can at least look into the living room while standing at the sink, but that’s the best we could do. If it were up to me, I’d have a true island directly in the middle with both sides opened up and one wall for cabinets, stove, fridge, and sink. It’s only two of us, so we can make do with the space for the time being, just trying to figure out the best layout for us to go with. Thank you for all the suggestions and feedback so far!

Which plan is more accurate? They are different with window spacing in corner.

    Wall A = ____"

    Wall B = _____"

    Wall C= ____"

    Window D with trim = ______"

    E Wall to corner = _______"

    F Corner to window trim = _______"

    Window G= ________"

Wall H window trim to corner =______"

Wall I corner to door trim = _____"

    J Doorway =__________"

Wall A = existing plumbing with washer dryer combo?

Wall C = existing stove gas line ?

    Wall I = ?

Can any wall of doorway be adjusted or removed? If so, which is support wall?

The wall separating the kitchen from the living room is already knocked down. I don’t have the exact measurements just yet, I can get them tomorrow if it helps! Would you recommend a peninsula on the right side of the picture instead of a small island? I’ll attach a picture as an idea of what we would do.

Thanks for posting photos! Helps a lot. At 1st glance a peninsula is a good idea in that situation. Like the inspiration photo just posted, too.

    tl;dr

I think the gray would be gorgeous with that flooring. safer if resale is on the horizon.

As much as we love the island look, a peninsula would give us more counter space. And as much as we love the navy blue, grey is probably better for resale in the future!

    last modified: 6 years ago

I would not choose gray for resale purposes. The general consensus seems to be that the gray trend is on its way out, so in a few years it may hurt more than help with resale. If you want to be designing for the trend cycle and resale, I'd think about wood or black for the island. If you're designing for you, do what you love.

Love that inspiration pic with the peninsula, that would be fabulous in a small space. I would still do white or wood though...if you were going to stay for 20 years I would say do what you love, if you are staying for 5 years, I would say play it safe with white or wood and have fun with the backsplash and accessories.
