Do stone fruits survive in Portland?

September 3, 2019

We recently moved to Portland, OR. I used to have a backyard orchard and was very excited to move where we could have lots of land to grow an orchard on. I've spoken with a neighbor who has fruit trees, and a landscape designer who both told me stone fruits (cherries, peaches, plums were named) DO NOT survive here. That we can only grow apples, pears or figs, none of which I like. The property we bought came with a bunch of apple trees so I don't need more of those. I really had my heart set on growing stone fruit, grapes, and kiwi -- and later on maybe building a geothermal green house for citrus, avocado, pomegranate... maybe mango, if it will survive!

Does anyone in Portland or the surrounding area successfully grow cherries, plums, nectarines, or apricots? Anyone successfully grow fruit in greenhouses?
