Planter Boxes with Trellis Lining Paved area.

I have a back yard paved area, rectangular in shape, roughly 18 feet by 8 feet enclosed by a fence on 3 sides. I imagined lining this area with rectangular planter boxes with attached trellis. I was hoping the planter boxes would be roughly 40 inches long, by 12 inches tall and 12 inches deep, with the trellis being at least 5 feet high. The planter boxes would contain flowers, other small plants ideally with vines on the trellis. Would this look weird? Too sterile? I can't seem to find planter boxes with three more than 3 feet wide, and I'm looking at over $1000 just for the planters alone, so would like a more cost effective option too.
