mudroom/laundry transition area

Hi everyone,

I don’t like the way the mudroom transitions into the rest of the house , which is all greys & white tones... should i just change the color of the wall? The marble was here and I cannot change it right now otherwise i would have done hardwood.

Thoughts?

I do like the black in the room. I prefer the more geometric and striped shapes over the first one I pictured. They work well with the lines of you cabinets. I do think that paint is throwing the transition off. I would paint or wallpaper the walls in the mudroom. If you wanted to do something really striking I would paint the cabinets black and keep the walls white and neutral or wallpaper them with something great in a white and black palm pattern.

What do you think about this? This is totally different than my usual taste but i think your right about bringing the black out of the hardware.
I did want to pick up on the grey thats throughout the rest of the house but i guess it doesnt have too. The woven “natural” ones are too beige for me.

something similar to what you posted and to be honest it doesn't thrill me. It doesn't have the same impact the others do against your flooring.

Your right. Definitely need to go a little darker

I like the 3rd & 4th you shared in your first photo. Can you send me the links?

Thank you everybody for all of the ideas and suggestions. From your recommendations and suggestions i have found a few top favorite rugs off of wayfair that i love... What are everyones favorites? They're all mostly similar and range from 2.3' -2.8' - 10 feet

okay went with rug #5 ^

Suggestions for the rest of the room to tie it all in? I ordered 4 black hooks for the mudroom build-in. Some kind of pillow and plants? Wait for rug to go in to see how i like it before making any other decisions?

I think the dark rug will help, but I would paint the walls the same as the trim (but flat/satin instead of whatever sheen the trim is). Then get some fun art and accessories, like you suggested - pillows, a nice plant on the cabinet. You're freaking out right now because you have no STUFF in there. Once you have jackets and backpacks in there it will look less sterile. The floor color is similar to the wood tones, but that wall color makes it look all wrong to me.

Did you order some fun bins for the top section? My go-to for bins of all sizes is Container Store... https://www.containerstore.com/locations/showStores.htm?searchType=zip&zipCode=55449&city=&findStore=

yes i did get some wooden-esque bins for the top.. agree about the wall-color. The trim is painted white, so you're saying to do a white wall as well in flat?

Are you opposed to wallpaper? I am assuming since you ordered wood like bins and have black hardware you may be trying to go for a modern farmhouse vibe?

@design-interiorsouth , no im not opposed to wallpaper, definitely need to do something different with the walls whether color or something. My house is kind of transitional, it was a traditional home that i tried to modernize a little bit, and ended up somewhere in the middle lol.

I tried using Benjamin Moore color viewer to color in white and charcoal. The colors are not coming out correct but maybe it will help you get inspired.

Kendall Charcoal or Chelsea Gray is a warmer dark gray.

or try more of the taupe-ish colors that work w/the travertine

I think there are many wallpaper options but this one immediately comes to mind. Its a charcoal and cream Shibori.

@mnmamax3 oh wow, those dark greys make the room look SO much better. Do you know which colors those 2 greys are?

@Beth H. : thanks so much for the ideas. im heading to benjamin moore today, so i should focus on a warm and darker grey! i'll let you know what i find, going to pick up some samples and throw them on the wall.

Due to the lighting in the photo, the colors on the wall looked much different than the colors I used (the "white wall color" was really a med taupe). I would keep with the same color family as you have on your existing walls (that we see just through the doorway) and just choose darker. There is a LOT of white in this room from all the cabinets and the contrast might really help offset it a bit. As Beth says, Kendall or Charcoal might be a good option. Paint posterboards instead for a more accurate color representation. Everything will be affected be the color already on the wall.

Thanks. My house is painted stonington gray which is a lot cooler and doesn’t look right in this room.
I picked up a few samples at BM today, here are some colors i liked . From the sheet, kendall gray looked SUPER dark, but i may pick up a bit just to see. These ate all deff warmer than my house color but i think it Will look better than the current beige..

There is a lot of light and white in that space. Don't be afraid to go dark to make sure it doesn't look like you tried to match the Stonington. It will be a different color and once there is stuff in your mudroom it will look less stark.

What do you thinkk of the 3 colors i sent above?

  • PRO

I like those 3. just grab some samples and see how they look. (what you can also do is go to HD and get a color match in the tiny Behr samples. they're only a few bucks. the color won't be exact, but it will be close enough to tell if it will work. BM samples are like $8 each, and they give you quite a bit)

Leana,,,try Smoke Embers and Abalone too. I forgot to mention those. I actually mixed both of them together for a custom mix for my neighbors bathroom and liked the color (each one by themselves is nice too)

    smoke embers on top.

    silver fox may work too

@beth silver fox looks nice. Smoke embers looks like it may be a tad bit light stilll... do you think the shades i picked up above are TOO dark?

I think you need to go with a larger contrast to your existing gray walls in the second room. You are choosing warm grays which work with your flooring but are not complimentary to your existing gray walls and that needs to be considered since the view is a layering of the two. I would go with a much deeper charcoal gray or even black paint. Both will work better with your floor as well as the paint in the adjoining space.

    Ben Moore :

    Wrought Iron

    Black Iron

    Night Fall

And depending on what other accents you have in the home even a blue like Van Deusen.

Sherwin Williams Tricorn is another worth a try.

Floor is fine. Agree with those that suggest you find a runner rug.

Use the same wall color as you choose for the adjoining room and make the two rooms one -- removing any connecting/adjoining door and door frame and creating as wide as possible a cased opening instead.

@designersouth thanks for the recommendations. I do agree the color should compliment the rest of the house but i think those colors are still too dark for my taste.

@suezbell thanks for idea. We wont be knocking down any walls however

Leana, what is the grey on the cabinet in the room beyond the door? Is that stained or painted? I would go at least as dark as that, otherwise it will look like you tried to match the Stonington and failed.

Another option i was looking at was BM whale gray, i think it looks nice with the house color but is a cooler gray and dont know if it works in this specific area. Thoughts? Blacks are too dark for me. The darkest i will go is a charcoal

@mnmama it is stained a dark gray. Im going to paint some swatches tomorrow and let you all know how they look.

whale gray may have too much blue. Wrought Iron is nice, but it's dark. I used it on my kitchen island.

here's how it compares to the others.

Yea it’s a little dark for me... im really thinking Chelsea gray will be the one. Will see when I swatch tomorrow

Another option i picked up. Too light?

You won't know how these look until you get them on some posterboards in your space - the amount of lighting and the surrounding white cabinetry will all affect how it looks. A designer told me once that you need to have colors two spaces away from each other on the strip to really notice any difference between them.

I painted 2 swatches, secret is top and chelsea gray is bottom. Thoughts? Hallway is Stonington blue and yes it looks super blue in this photo but dont think it looks that blue in person. The mudroom also has a door so doesnt need to be a “perfect” blend, i more so want it to blend with the room itself better

  • PRO

It should absolutely compliment the color of the next room as that is where the eye automatically travels because the line of vision, especially in a room like a mud room that is considered a walk through space, moves to the next space. These paint visualizer tools always stink LOL but here is a Behr color called Astronomical

I think both of those colors complement the grey-stained cabinet... Tape white printer paper around the swatches to be able to evaluate the swatches without the base color. I found this online with Chelsea and Stonington together so I don't think they clash from room to room. What is your lighting? Make sure bulbs are in the 4000K range for most accurate light.

@Design Interior South that's a lot better than I can do lol. i do like that color a lot. It seems to have a bit more blue in it than the ones i chose, do you think that's okay to mix into this room even though the floor is so brown? So the 2 above don't compliment the hallway color then?

@mnmamax3 i do agree, im going to also try 1 more shade, and decide from there. Thanks for all of your help, you guys always teach me so much

Well the floor is warm but if you look closely you also have some cool taupe tones in it and you can certainly do blue or blue tones with it.

Out of those two the bottom. I believe that was Chelsea Gray.

The dark greys look muddy to me with that floor. Maybe good for a mudroom;) but I say go for a nice medium or dark blue/grey ..more blue would look amazing with the white. It’s such a small wall space and so much white, it would look great!

    Something like SW smoky blue?
