70s curb appeal - help!

last modified: 6 years ago

Does anyone have any ideas to freshen up the exterior of this home? I’m not a fan of the brown. This is a home I’m thinking of making an offer on, but I can’t get past the curb appeal.

Would you paint the brick maybe a cream/white? Add Cedar shutters/cedar porch area? Maybe refinish the front door?

I’m not sure. Any help would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't paint the brick (remember, it will have to be repainted eventually) but all of the dark brown can be painted, and there are several colors that would work. Cream, of course; medium to lighter blues, greens. You could even go with a coral shade, then paint the front door a pretty contrasting color.

I kind of like the door color, but there are many other colors that would look good with the brick - depends on what you change all the brown too.

If/when the roof needs replacement, go with something more like weathered wood, which works with many colors.

Don't let the drab brown deter you if the house is otherwise right for you - there are many more important things to look for in choosing a home.

ETA: shutters would not look right on this style of house

New windows, repaint the brown a lighter color one found in the brick. If possible rebrick the arches over the windows, if unable to find the brick, make them into an accent space, all the way to peak with vertical siding like the porch and paint that same new color. New door and /or door color.

Once you do all that, tackle the landscaping. It will be cute.

Paint the brown cream or beige. Put a curve in sidewalk. Charming house. Landscape & flowers/tree/bush.

I am lime washing our house with Romabio lime wash. It will not peel like paint and is a mineral that breathes like brick so it will never peel you can also power wash it off if you want. Here is my sample test. Haven’t done the whole house yet.

I love the colors in your brick. Find a fresh color out of the brick and replace all the dark blah brown. Your yard could use attention. Things look tired and under kept. Love the orange door!!

Landscaping improvement and care is desperately needed. Add a tree or two and some structured plantings and color. Change the gravel of the path to a deeper color by adding a 2-inch darker layer: it will work its way into the pale gravel in time. Paint the board-and-batten exterior a lighter brown found in the brick and replace the checkerboard-lined front door with a simple vertical-panel door contrasting with the b-a-b siding.

I see the darker brick color that they used to work with when painting the siding. There are a lot more lighter brick than darker brick so I would pick a lighter color to paint the siding and trim. Also, there is so much brick on the left side of the house I would add shutters to the windows to fill in some of that space. Make sure that the shutters are adequately sized for the windows. Get the landscaping under control. In some of your pictures it seems to be hiding the entrance to some extent. Finally, add some furniture to the front porch to make it a more inviting space.

If the inside of the house and the location are OK then I think the things outlined are inexpensive things you can do to enhance the curb appeal.

Thank you everyone for the ideas! The house is a great fit for me. It needs cosmetic work, but that’s totally doable with time. I was just struggling to visualize the exterior differently. I love the idea of leaving the brick as it is. Good thoughts on just updating the wood area around the porch, and yes! Much landscaping needs to be done here. It’s a lot of work but it’ll be worth it in the end!

I would paint the wood one of the light tones of the brick.
