Is matte finish on hardwood a lot harder to clean?

I was 98% ready to commit to a hardwood floor choice (Junckers Ash solid hardwood in a matte finish) when I decided to put our sample to one last test. I asked DH to stand on the 3'x3' sample in his work shoes. To my dismay, his black rubber soles left quite a few smudges, which I wasn't able to remove (granted, I haven't tried anything stronger than a damp cloth and elbow grease so far).

We had the same floor but in a light gloss polyurethane finish the past 20 years, and we rarely had any scuff marks to deal with, at least not that i remember.

Just wondering if this is common with matte finishes? I don't want to scold everyone to take their shoes off, and I'd rather not have a finish that will require me to clean it daily.

And um, forgot to mention: the matte finish is on sale and in stock nearby, 2-3 days for delivery. The gloss version is not on sale and has to be shipped from Denmark--a 5-6 week delay (we need the floors sooner!).

I'm no clean freak, but I am kind of bummed to see how easy this finish was to smudge.

I have matte floors throughout my house and have not noticed any particular tendency to smudge or scuff. Normal sweep and mop upkeep.

@acm, thanks so much for chiming in! Perhaps it was just my DH's type of shoes.

We are getting new hardwoods, my installer suggested satin finish, a similiar look but not as hard to clean. If you google mate floors,. it is a thing. Stands out more the darker the floor.

This reminds me of my elementary PE teacher who made us clean scuff marks off the gym floor. (He was a real treat). Anyway, we actually used our non-marking gym shoe soles as an eraser and it took the marks right off.

I have no help on your actual question though.

I have hardwood floors finished with Bona matte. Easy to clean and I have not noticed scuffs. We have kids and a busy home.

I had Dreamfoam slippers with black soles. My DDIL said they left black marks on her floors! So I bought ones with grey soles and no more marks, quick fix.

My brothers shoes leave black marks on my laminate wood floors. I just use a Mr. Clean eraser and it takes care of it. He’s only here once or twice a year, so no big deal.

Try a pink eraser (the on found on the end of a traditional wood pencil). Those should come right off.

@SJ McCarthy, funny, that was the second thing I tried after my fingernail! Did nothing. The Junckers rep suggested a tennis ball. I haven't tried that yet. In any case, the old light polyurethane finish is starting to sound better and better to me. Either that or make the DH wear booties over his evil soles, lol.

Well, this point is a bit moot for us a this point as the particular flooring I chose turned out NOT to be on sale after all...so back to the ol' drawing board. Sigh!

I just got matte finish hardwood floors and was told to clean with windex by the manufacturer. it just smears. any recommendations on what to clean the matte finish with. They said not to use water or vinegar. Help!!!

Linda, I have matte finished floors and use a damp microfiber mop to clean mine after vaccuming. Never any issues at all. Our hardwood guy gave the thumbs on this method.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the help.

Hey I should probably weigh in since I started the post: I ended up with Pantim Palladio floors in a matte finish and LOVE them! We wear our shoes and have had almost zero scuffing. Hooray!

I know this is an old post but i am having the same problem with white oak floors that were refinished with Bona water-based matte finish. It looked beautiful on day one. Period. Everything shows and the recommended Bona cleaner with the Bona microfiber mop leaves the floor dull and dingy. i am not overdoing the amount of cleaner; only a fine mist. To those who say they don't have a problem cleaning this type of floor, what are you using? And when you say a damp mop, are you sprayng water on the floor or the mop? i keep reading you shoukd never use water on a wood floor. Thanks for any advice. i am so disappointed i chose a matte finish.

You should use a barely damp mood on wood floors. Any water left on the surface should evaporate quickly, if not, follow up with a towel wrapped around the mop to get everything dry.

I no longer use Bona wood or tile cleaning products as they seem to leave a residue over time making the floors harder to keep clean.
