I would definitely paint the trim the same soft white as the rest of your house, it will freshen everything up and a soft white will work well with the cherry

Agree. You might also experiment with different light bulbs or consider alternate lighting to brighten up the space.

I had a kitchen very much like yours with a slight variation--cherry cabinets, sheet vinyl floor, one window facing south, black glass oven, cabinet-paneled refrigerator and DW, and white laminate countertops. It also was dark, and we painted all the trim white from the get-go. I have to say that did little to brighten it, although dark trim would have made it feel even darker and closed in. We had lots of recessed lighting, under-cabinet lighting, a chandelier over the table and pendants over the island. However, nothing can make up for lack of natural light. I lived with it for many years, but when the appliances started to go, I went for a total overhaul and added 4 more windows and a 5' sliding french door, along with white cabinets. THAT has made a difference! But if you're not ready for an overhaul, then painting the trim white will be a good step in the right direction, as would adding some more artificial light.
