Awkward space between long living/dining room

Hi everyone! We just moved into this rental and I cannot figure out what to do with this space between the living and dining areas. I plan on moving the living room rug to the dining room, and getting a bigger rug for the living, but there'd still be that empty space.

It doesn't help that the dining light fixture was installed so far back in the room, meaning I can't move the table any closer to the living area. I'm totally open to rearranging the living room, if you can think of a better layout.

Thanks in advance for your ideas! I'm adding some pictures, so have a good understanding of the space I'm working with.

P.S. Bonus points if you have any ideas on how to conceal the air vent that really needs a good cleaning without blocking it :)

Nothing needs to be in the space at the bottom of the stairs. When you get the larger living room rug, you may pull the sofa slightly further from the TV, but still not block the stairs at all. You can put a sofa table behind the sofa, if desired. You may put a rug in the space between the LR and DR if you don’t like the empty space at the bottom of the stairs.

i like the look of adding chairs behind a sofa, or a table with or without stools. that would take up some of the space but still leave room for in front of the stairs.

I love your rug. I would go with just sofa table and decor. I am not sure that your TV is on right spot. I would rethink layout not block the window.

Is it possible to post a picture of the other wall in the living room and a floor plan with measurements.

I think I would try the TV on that wall and the sofa on the wall with the small window or the opposite - hard to tell without understanding the full space.

Don't like the TV directly in front of the window.

The awkward open space may feel less awkward if you are not facing the back of the sofa.

It looks like the charming puppy dog has found a use for that space already!

Thank you all for your feedback! I love the idea of the sofa table.

@Jennifer I did try the couch on the big wall, but couldn’t make the tv work. You’ll see in the pic, the wall on the other side of the room has two openings for the entry way and staircase, making it difficult to put the tv on that side of the room. The tv in front of the window and having the couch where it is definitely wasn’t my first choice, but this space has me stumped!

    Pics added!

The TV needs to come off the window wall, for sure. I would put it on a long console on the wall opposite the stairs, turn the seating and see if that doesn't take up some of the space.

Otherwise, you don't really need anything between living and dining. It's an obvious walk space at the bottom of the stairs.

Here's your furniture arrangement, though on a bit larger scale:

Have the chairs facing the windows.

@groveraxle Okay, so I have tried this out as well, I’m attaching a picture so you can see how long and narrow the room is. I moved the couch to the proposed location, but I feel like it looks a bit odd because the room is so narrow. Let me know your thoughts.

Tough space, but I know what I would do

Sofa under window, TV inside a room divider near the stairs.

Lauren K, the couch needs to move more toward the window, It should not encroach at all on the stair space.

What is that opening behind the couch to the left of the stair?

Also, Lauren, if you could give us measurements of the room and indicate where the stairs are and that opening to the left of it, we could work up a floor plan for you.

@groveraxle The other opening is the entry to the front door, as well as a powder bath and storage, so I can’t block that either. If I push the couch any father toward the window, it would block that opening. Attached a pic!

Also, I don’t have the floor plan or measurements. I could probably ask the landlord.

only thing I would put there is a console/charging station to hide all those cords. maybe hang a nice piece of art above it(not necessarily this style, just the main idea)

or, what about a little desk? you need something like that?

Hi Beth! Thank you for your suggestions! Thankfully, it’s on the honey do list to move those routers and cords up to the office, where we have a desk. A couple of people suggested a table similar to the first pic directly behind the couch, which I think could maybe do the trick. Thoughts?

I also just had a thought, what about a bookcase of sorts in this area?

    Something like one of these

those could work. you really don't need much of anything. I'd keep it light and simple.

To me you’ve two alternates for couch and TV placement. By purchasing a purpose built swivel ‘lazy-susan’ for your television you can alter the viewing angle substantially. So I’d prefer to see the couch on the long wall and the TV console on the entry wall. With aforementioned swivel & asymmetrical placement of your TV toward the entry, you could easily optimize your viewing. Second option is to place the couch in front of the window & place the TV on the long wall- but I think additional pieces either side of the console would be needed to weight that side of the room. Options for bookcases for display plus closed storage?

I would never recommend bookcases unless you have something to put in them. I've seen too many filled with fake plants and Hobby Lobby junk that aren't worth looking at.

I repeat that if we at least had measurements of the space, we could aim for a better furniture arrangement that doesn't include the TV in front of a window.

Try putting the TV on the long wall to the left of the small window. Pull the whole seating arrangement toward the dining area so the back of the sofa is aligned with the opening to the stairs. (If there isn't enough walk space, flip sofa and chairs so the chairs are aligned with the stairs.)

That will at least put more of your empty space between the living area and the window. Perhaps it will reduce the empty space enough that you won't feel a need to fill it. It will also get the TV off the window.

Your doodle is SO CUTE!!! I like Grover's idea above. Moving your picnic table slightly toward the living area also might reduce some of the no-mans-land in between.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Just wanted to update you all! I finally found a layout that I love. Here’s the final result, Christmas version! Thanks for all of your help
  • 6 years ago

I love it! The only thing I would do is try to center the sofa under the window a little bit more. Congrats!

Thank you! Must just be the angle I took the pic from. Just measured and it’s centered!

Much better arrangement As for the vent, give it a good cleaning and paint it the same color as walls.
