What color/pattern would work best with a modern theme? It’s hard to tell from the photo but we have a glass top coffee table. And our view is of the ocean, so we really liked the thought of incorporating blues. Guess the rug was too much? thanks Elaine :)

Yes, the dark couches with the dark rug is too much. Put in top search box modern rug pattern color in photos and see all the ideas. One I liked was the rug with a white background and black diamond pattern. Another was a rug with off-white and green diamond pattern. Blues are fine - very calming. Also bring those colors into huge wall art and accessories such as a throw, pillows, lamp base, etc. Speaking of lighting, I might trade out that three light fixture number you have for the following: a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. You may not have a modern look, but instead a casual look due to the couches. Educate yourself about the different decor styles by putting them one at a time in the top search box. Start off with modern, then casual, then eclectic, then transitional, etc.
