Design my living room around this burgundy sofa

Hi all, we are moving to a new place and have a blank slate to decorate the living room.... except for a burgundy faux leather sofa. I will post a pic. It’s at my friends house, she is letting us buy it cheap, so while it’s not really my style I want to try and get some ideas to decorate around it. The living room is open concept with medium tone wood floors and walls and ceiling. The ceiling is high with skylights... there is a rock fireplace the sofa will be facing. I would love some ideas on how to decorate! The kitchen wall which is all in the same space is a deep red color. Thank you for ANY suggestions!

I think so, the wall in the kitchen is a deep red color so I think the sofa color will be good, this house is a ranch style on a farm so I really like the idea of the plaid chairs! Thanks for your input. Now if I do a bold plaid on the chairs like you showed, would it clash with the rug designs, I like the gold one that housegal showed me and I also really like the one you picked.

I think it's a great idea to layer prints especially in a rustic/country setting. Ralph Lauren has lots of examples of rooms with mixed prints.

Sorry, I didn't know you wanted a farmhouse direction. For once, somebody's actually living on a farm! I like the chair and rug ashton chic is showing though you might want a little less of the burgundy since you have that wall and the big sofa. But definitely a great big patterned rug with a bit of a rustic feel.

Excuse me but it's no wonder your friend doesn't want it. It's the StaPuff Marshmallow Sofa.

Don't buy it. It will become the decorating albatross around your neck. : )

There are plenty of comfortable recliner sofas out there that don't look so very sloppy.

Is the matching chair in the friend's photo available, too? If you can get both, then add a rug you love. When you are ready to replace the burgundy faux leather items, you can buy things that go with the rug.

No she’s keeping the love seat.... replacing the sofa with a sleeper sofa

Housegal, I like that rug! I’m not sure about teal color chair though....and yes! We are buying a mini farm! so yea, farmhouse/ country style is where I’m heading. I appreciate that not everyone is down on the sofa, I really am starting to like it and think it might really work, sir I’d lice real leather but we have a whole house to furnish so I’ve got to be sensible!

to talk about color: I like this basic neutral called stone....? doesn't have to have rolled-type arms like sofa....swivel chair has a slipcover feel to be mixed into nurseries, playrooms, dens, or living rooms / welted look and defining track armrests. W 30" / D 35" / H 36" / 95% Polyester, 5% Nylon.

TY everdebz I like the tip on the chair style, I was thinking the rolled arms needed to match. Gives me much more options! I think color wise I want to go in the golds, sage greens, beige/tancolors

Here are some wood panelled living rooms (more log cabin style than farmhouse) with reds, golds, sages, etc.

ohhh nice, I LOVE the plaid chairs in the top picture. Wonder how to find out where to buy those or brand?

and that tufted coffee table is nice as well!

Check Wayfair.com and Overstock. com which will enable you to use their search filters to specify colors, style, fabrics, etc. Create an Ideabook for rooms you like on Houzz using the search terms: "wood panelled living room."

Colors you listed can be for all sorts of things, from paint to rug to lamp, etc... just think the 'stone' color if a greige might be versatile.... if we see the stone fp....?

I have searched all the online stores, wayfair, overstock, etc. I am not seeing what I had in mind. I saw some soft tartan plaid chairs on pinterest that I really like but I'm not able to figure out where to buy here in the USA. They are very soft, reds, mossy greens and beiges. Wish I could find them.

If you are looking for something made in the U.S.A. try looking at Sturbridge Yankee on line. Then sign up for the emails because they do some great promo's. I have purchased from them and have not been disappointed. That includes a rocker and footstool, ladder back chair and boot bench. They send out free samples on upholstery too. Ort Furniture Manufacturer and BEST furniture is still made in the U.S. so perhaps you can locate a retailer that carries them. When I did my kitchen I decided to be contrary and found lace tiers and valances made in Iowa, sold through Touch of Class. Stroud Rugs in North Carolina has a website and manufactures braided rugs. Have fun with the new place!

    Hickory Chair - asking $75 - CraigsList

Or, Bradington Young Leather Sectional - asking $1800 - Craigslist - Just saying. . .

And congrats on your farm! We did the same 20 years ago and it's been great fun - truly a labor of love.

the sofa is beautiful, but I have decided on the other. I wanted some softer lighter colors in the plaid for chairs, like I shared, not dark, but thanks. Can I ask where you found the chairs? I have gone to a couple of places where you can customize fabrics and no one has this soft red/green plaid. Seems everything is grey, blue or black plaids.....

oh never mind I see its a Hickory chair!

    I found this one....thoughts??

also this style.....I wanted two chairs, could I do mismatched styles, one swivel one with ottoman? Or should they be the same style? Or maybe just one and another type chair. It's not plaid but I do like the fabric....a bit darker than I wanted

Why are you buying a not attractive sofa that isn’t even real leather unless your friend is selling it for under $20? I just gave away to a friend a 3 piece real Victorian love seat and two chairs covered in expensive European wool and the frames were real walnut because nowadays even quality furniture isn’t selling. Don’t pay for cheap stuff

@msgreenbean, You now have plenty of ideas as many people suggested you here. Visualizing all the ideas together would be a challenge. Like which rug will go well with my sofa and visa Versa. We have been helping a lot of fellow homeowners on how to visualize a room. all we need is the dimension of your room and you will get input as shown below.

You can see this design and multiple other designs in photo-realistic 360 views here and interactive 3D design of this room. Swap the furniture until you find a perfect match for your room.

    Happy decorating !!

Both chairs are too close in color to the sofa. Your room would be a sea of burgundy. I would look for a plaid or print with just a bit of the burgundy color, maybe something with tan as a base color. If you’re thinking of using two different styles of chairs, I would not use the same fabric for both. My preference would be to use a geometric (plaid) on one chair and a print on the other, staying with the same color pallet for both.

What are the actual dimensions of 1) the room 2) the sofa (including seat height) and any other items you plan to put in the space? Knowing these dimensions determines the size of chairs and rug. Finding a soft plaid chair isn't hard but it may be more $$$ than you wish to spend. Maybe neutral fabric chairs along with plaid throw and cushions could work? Also, the chairs should meet the sofa in scale and presence. Since you mentioned you like big and soft furniture, won't be too hard to do but measuring is key.

Overall, I would stop letting the "burgundy" in the sofa boss the palette so much. The sofa is just one element. BTW,when will the sofa be IN your space ....asking because the pic of the sofa shared above does NOT look like it will read all that red when separated from the rug currently in front of it.

Hello msgreenbean - I was simply posting the CL listings to encourage you to cast your net a little wider (have no idea where you're located!), it might be worth your time and save some $$. It's a bit more environmentally friendly also. You will have the possibility to buy higher quality durable goods at affordable prices that will look much better as they age in addition to maintaining comfort. In addition, the "overstuffed" look is quite commonly found here (I'm looking for track arms, so that makes me crazy, lol!). If you have access to Facebook, Facebook Market place is also a useful place to peruse. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! we close on the house Monday.... should be able to get more pics of the empty room and measurements, we pick up the sofa later on this week. I went looking today and found some beautiful plaid with gold red and green, by England Chairs, Montana Lodge Classic is the name.... now to decide on chair style. I liked the look of the paisley chair style but agree it Too much red.

Lightened burgundy is these types of neutrals, that they label 'pink'.... for a bit of soft feminine feel I think:

I just looked at the Montana Lodge fabric. Burgundy is a major player in that fabric. I think you’re going to run into the same issue I mentioned earlier - too much burgundy! It would look nice if your couch were the gold or green, but not with the burgundy. JMO.

@everdebz - Thanks for that Biddy Murphy wool blanket link, I may have just found the throw we've been looking for! No plastic microbeads down the drain either! #green

Sorry Laura but what's plastic about?... glad you like it - I did too.

Plastic "fleece" releases micro-plastic fibers when washed. It ends up in the waterways/ocean and then in fish, etc. Google "microfiber pollution", there's quite a bit of information. Anyway, no problems with sheep wool!

Love love love all these ideas! Thanks everdebz and 2pups4me!! My head is spinning but in a great way. I loved the Montana fabric but I think ur right still too red and when I went by there today after closing the window treatments that are up and YES I am keeping them, for now anyways and maybe for good, are you guessed it, red and cream. So I guess I really need to go with the other neutral colors... I’m loving golds, creams, sage greens.... I will be there tomorrow waiting on a fedex delivery of bed so I will take some pics and post later this week.... no internet yet. Wooo so much going on trying to move a little at a time, work an hour away and get decorated!! Thank you all for all the ideas, can’t wait to go forward and get this done! Stick with me, I’ve got a dining room, bedroom after this!

Congratulations on closing! I’ll be following along - love your new house.
