need help with living room!

After many failed attempts at posting and attaching photos I am trying one last time. I do apologize to the commenters on my previous thread but my old thread wont let me attach any new photos. so I'm praying this works!!! My living room needs help. I've taken peoples advise and added more curtain panels, got a rug, got a side table with lamp, cleaned up my corner bookshelf. some suggested adding another colour but with my honey oak hardwoods I dont know how that would look? does anyone have any suggestions? thank you!!!

You're welcome. I think your pillows are fine. I would just put them in the corners so they feel more casual and not so lined up.

You can try the picture in the store but I think it's a bit too light and you could use something with more contrast. Since you already have a painting over the love seat though, I do like Beverly's idea of using a series of prints instead. If you love the painting in the store, it certainly couldn't hurt to try it.

I don't mind the woven basket. Does it serve a purpose or are you just using it for decorative reasons?

I may give it a try! thank you. basket just to add some tone that matches my honey floors. so warm

any ideas of a colour throw blanket ? or should I wait until I find art

Your room looks very nice, the only tweaks from here will only add to the already pretty room. I will measure things out, such as in the art in order to get the sizing good, as I have heard here, 3/4's of the length of the sofa. I would break it up as was suggested, a larger piece over one sofa and a series of prints over the other. Do you need extra light because the mirror across from the window may be blinding at times. Can you return the woodsy print if it doesn't work? My take on that print is that it is pretty and has warm colors but that your colors in your room are more summer colors and the art is in fall colors, also it looks pretty soft in coloring, you may need something with a little more impact. I like what you have but its all one tone, maybe bring in some more color in the art, but that also includes some of the deeper blue tones as well. That's my 2cents for whatever its worth. I would wait to get the art you want to keep for any additional accessories, that's where you can add some more color.

    katarina thank you!!!!!

I really appreciate this comment... love your advise !

I would wait to find art before you decide on a throw.

do you think the golds will work? may pick it up just to try

I really think you should try it. You seem drawn to it and it can't hurt to add a little warmth to the space.

I would try to find a different chair. The stripe pattern looks too much like something you’d find on patio furniture. Also, perhaps you can find a different lamp table. This one's style is cottage which the room really isn’t. No mirror! Stick with a piece of art which complements the colors of the room - I’d look for apiece with warm tones of oranges/golds.

    new plant pot!

    Pretty!

would you get a blue regular sized pillow katinparadise? and not a small rectangle one?

I'm sorry Cc, a pillow for where?

So far so good; you really have some lovely choices going on in the room....art and mirror if you go that route should be 2/3 the width of what it is hanging above and bottom of wall hangings should be 5-12 inches above the furniture.

When I said plants in the corner bookcase I meant so full you could only see plants; it will add some color and shape to the corner and counter balance the sofa/loveseat combo. than is why I suggested WalMart.....but you could try Goodwill, and wash the fake plant is soapy water rinse dry and stuff in the corner; more plants, less pots and walls and shelves.....BIG....lol.

katinparadise sorry, i meant the way I had the pillows. Is that right? I don't know how to set them on couch.

The pillows look fine. The only one I don't care for is the brown striped pillow on the blue striped chair. I think that may look better with a solid lumbar pillow or a different pattern in blue.

the chair pillow matches the pillow. it came with it

I have to say that I don't care for the stripes on the pillow with the stripes on the chair. Can you try putting the striped pillow on the sofa and the solid white pillow on the chair? Honestly, you don't really need any pillow on the chair.

Hi Cc it is really starting to come together. adding the basket to the corner piece is just right. I also would remove the cushion on your corner arm chair. it doesn't require one. Sorry you are struggling with your artwork. Your room still feels as if it requires some weight. Maybe look for some art with a wide warm wood frame. The one you liked in the store doesn't have enough deep colour in it to balance the darker blue. Keep looking The wood colour on the frame above side chair is good. It is better to leave the wall blank than put up something that doesn't add to your room. I personally don't think a mirror adds enough weight to the room. Suggest you put the print back over the love seat.

I also agree that your end pillows would look better leaned up more against the arm. (pretend you are going to put your head down.)

Your coffee table is fine, as is the plant pot. I love your corner chair.

How about art that includes dark blue and dark mustard colours.. You live in a cold climate so please don't add more white.

A wood carving, or anything wood on your coffee table would help. The table arrangement already helps. The little pumpkin is great at adding another little layer.

Keep going Cc you are getting there. Looks great! Congrats.

notice the lack of white in most of these. Van Gogh painted in rich deep colours that would suit your room.

you still require another light source in this room. Maybe think about a new ceiling fixture on a dimmer. It would have more impact than a throw, at this stage of the game. An uplight under your larger plant would put great dappled light on the ceiling. Tuck it behind the plant.

    Love the heavier drapes.

A colourful piece in your basket would add another layer. Try something in a bold colour.

You could add another layer with another neutral large floor basket. Purchase one large enough to

hold a throw. Homesense usually has lots of large baskets.

where would you place a floor basket??

    last modified: 6 years ago

Basket could go just about anywhere. in front of the white corner unit. At the end of the love seat with the plant, near the single corner chair grouping. (maybe in front of the floor lamp. This would be a layering piece, that will bring your room together. You have great basics, now it is just amping up the room to add interest. Don't obsess over the art. Just keep an out for what you really like.

Only purchase what really speaks to you. Otherwise leave wall blank.

Hope you consider changing the overhead light. (it cheapens the look of the room.) The size is determined by adding the room's width and lenght dimension ie 13 + 15 + 28. so it would be 28" Semi flush as mentioned before is best. You could also take out the existing light and put an outlet cover on it until you are ready.

Great Job! now your can bring in any colour any time of the year. All you will require is a few pieces of the colour you want to bring in. It will be fun to change up your room seasonally and keep it fresh. I like the changes you are trying on corner unit.

Have you tried the striped cushion on the love seat? (if it is stuffed too tightly, open up a seam or zipper and remove some of the filling. I have found some cushions that come with other furniture tend to be overly stuffed)

Cc you’re welcome, happy to help. The yellow is bold I know, but just to show you with a little bit of color...you can really transform a room!

    Have fun :)

Garden, is I am not a big fan of the yellow do you find the natural wood look to work as another colour?? see photo attached

Cc the table is neutral..no color. Are you happy with your room or do you desire more color? If so, start with more colorful artwork and pull a color from it to accessorize with (Like above). Your new artwork is nice, although very matchy matchy.

Its your room so I say do whatever makes you happy!

    Cute Kitty :)

Cc just an fyi. really don't think you should consider your round table as another colour.

Have you considered adding bright light green as your accent colour? That would allow you to still add red, orange, gold etc. at different times of the year.

If you pick an accent color, you could get pillow covers for the white pillows. They seem a lillte stark to me. I like the new ocean picture. G!ood progress!

christopher by colour I meant the flower pot on the end table. sorry for the confusion. it matches the floor

    last modified: 5 years ago

while you might consider that an accent, you would require much more of that color in soft accents for it to really become an accent. Think about how the Mexicans use it with their bright yellows and greens etc. Think of your floor as a neutral not a colour. hope that helps. The plant is more of an accent. Cc maybe you should just try adding another larger plant in lighter greens or variegated greens as you seem reluctant to really add another colour to your space.

If you love what yo have going, keep it the way you Love it.

Also, don't think a bright green throw would work for you. what colour/style are you thinking about for your future throw.

also, I think your style is eclectic, as you are willing you add furniture you love in different styles. It is definitely my favourite style. Colour is what pulls it all together, Buy what you love.

just my opinion, have you considered just two blue pillows for the winter and then switching them to all white for the summer?

I found the lumbar pillow was a little small... as it was a cheap buy. it was also a tad navy and I wanted to being more of the cobalt blue it from the rug. the picture above is also a new purchase! I do like it !!!

I've added more blue hues here and there but I suppose another colour would be nice I just dont want it to come across as too much as I find the rest of my home is in a more neutral palate. I've also updated the light fixture see photo.

light is nice update. how about trying two navy pillows on each end. how does it look with striped pillow in centre of sofa with just two navy pillows. Keep trying different pillow looks and take a few more pictures. Ha I have a stash of pillows that I switch out every season and highly recommend that design change up.

They are the easiest way to really change up a room.

hi again, after looking again, the art over the love seat should be lowered. have it the same distance above the sofa as your other art.

Right now your scheme is cool tones of gray and blue, with no contrasting colors. Try pillows in lemon yellow or gold to warm up your space. The art again is blue and gray, and you really need small doses of a contrasting color to liven up the room. By the way, your kitty is adorable.

Pulling in some warm tones with your art and with pillows would be great to try. The rectangular word art over the chair is wrong in its dimensions, and is also hung too high. A more vertical painting that has some color to it other than blue or gray would be a better plan. If it's a piece that has sentiment to you I would hang it in another room. It does nothing for the living room I'm afraid. Instead of the ladder in the corner I'd look for a small table and put a lamp on it. Those ladders were trendy for a while but not so much now. Again the colors add nothing to the room. You want a space that has some layering in color complexity to keep it from looking cold and static. It will take mostly small touches, nothing that will break the bank, but the difference will be great.
