What Color Should I Paint My House?

Hello,

I have lived in my first home for about a year now and my fiance and I have done about all of the small projects before we dive into the big projects. My house is a 1963 mid-century modern that had one owner before we bought it so it was basically a time capsule! Including the hardwood floors that we found under the worn down shag wall-to-wall carpeting. We want to paint our home, but aren't sold on what color/trim color to do. That brings me to my question, what would you paint our house? We live in Milford, Ohio.

I don't know what color, but I'd paint it all one color, including the white around the garage.

Would you even do the trim the same color?

Thanks for the compliment on the color, I wish I was a fan of it, because I feel kinda bad changing it. But here is Cincinnati we have this restaurant called Skyline Chili and all I can see is the cheddar cheese that they put on all of their in the color of my house lol! I am up for any landscaping suggestions you might have.

    I definitely like the black.

Mmmm...a moss or sage green, maybe, if you're looking for a more subtle color. You could do a cedar garage door. (Caveat: I am not a pro.)

Garage door ideas (I see that you have two separate garage doors, but I am including a single door as well because it looks so deliciously MCM.)

Oh, I do love the gray with the cedar!

if it is stown around garage area, I would pick similar color for house, so it doesn't stand out. garage doors would look spectacular as in Elaine Ricci comment, if not in budget keep them same as now.

Yes, the white is brick/concrete. I am really digging the cedar/gray combo!

I love your house! Would love to see the inside.

I have fallen in love with gray and white, and a lime green door. This one has no cedar but some cedar would look great, too.

Cute house. I think almost any color would be better than what you have! I would embrace the MCM feel and use an olive green so it blends with your surroundings, with a deep brown expresso trim.

Maybe this before and after will be a color scheme you can use.

That before and after house has been sent to me so many times! I love it!

I love how that before and after did their house number, it’s totally gonna be how we do ours! It’s kinda uncanny how similar these houses are!

Nice house pic -- family included. In all candor, that yellow/orange color seems almost florescent and makes my eyes want to squint.

I like the bold blue for all the exterior walls, as well as the garage doors, Keep the deck a nd fascia and exposed rafters and the door bold black. You might remove the one shrub that blocks the view of the front door and, perhaps, add a brass kick plate to the bottom of the front door for a bit of "pop". Do keep the soffit white.

After you paint, and if budget and lot size and building codes permit, you might consider adding a porch by extending forward the roof with the same roof line over the entire left side of the house. You'd be adding a roof over the deck and adding shelter for your front door and steps, too without changing the basic character of the house.

For landscaping, consider moving the shrubs you have to the edge of the side of your lot and then replace them with shrubs you can keep trimmed to a uniform height beginning at the right front corner of the deck all the way to the left edge of the property, eventually creating a privacy screen top of deck rail height -- privacy for a future patio on the left side of the house. You could even enlarge the deck and create an addition to your home in that corner -- keeping the same roof line.

"Avoid the temptation to overhaul a mid century modern home’s entire facade when remodeling or adding on. Not only is this a daunting design challenge, but it can also be prohibitively expensive. Instead, remember what attracted you to the house in the first place, and let the original design shine through."

"A home’s front facing corner is a key opportunity for an upgrade."

"Entry canopy. A sleek and eye-catching entry canopy over the front door can focus attention on your home’s entry and can be a practical intermediary connecting inside to out. This is also a great space to welcome guests. Because there is only one front door to a house, this feature is unique to the house and does not have to match other parts, giving greater freedom for design. In New England, where sloped roofs are considered more practical because of the unpredictable winters, a dramatic roof pitch over your entry can actually add a modern flair."

I vote for cawaps second picture in their first comment, the light cream/beige body with grey around the garage.

Ummm, cawaps this is beyond amazing! Did you use photoshop to do this? Thank you! I love it!

I used Word to do the garage doors and front door, everything else was in Benjamin Moore's online color app. Once you get the areas of the house set up, it's easy to "repaint." If there are any Benjamin Moore colors you want to try, I can try them out for you.

I Love the last picture in the 2nd post of Cawaps. I am a blue lover for exterior though. ;) Many many options but your home has a lot of potential!

Definitely a dark green or gray. No light or pastel colors please.

cawaps first pic. How would it look if window trim above the garage was also painted dark like the other windows? Definitely new landscape. Great house!

With black window trim on the garage side (sorry, it's a bit sloppy)

Very much like the medium blue and the darker blue and the dark reddish brown and either of the last two suggestion of cawaps as long as any of them have the matching wood for the door and garage doors.

IF, however, you paint the garage doors, then paint the garage doors the same color as the house exterior walls.

    The darker colors look better.

Assuming you were only doing paint and no updates to the doors (garages and entry):

I actually love orange, but totally understand why it'd be jarring on the exterior of the house. If you think you'd miss the "cheddar" too much you could use it as an accent color on your front door lol.

What a cute house! I can see why you want to change the cheddar color. I would do a medium sage green and leaves the rest of the house as is. If it's painted one color it looses too much of its charm.

I love the dark gray and cedar combo. Charming house!

The garage doors should be the same darker trim color, not the same color of the siding, unless you are replacing them with wood.
