Really need help with the issues I have with Home Depot

Hello, Everyone, I believe a lot of people here remembering I started several posts to get help with my kitchen design. A lot of people helped me figure out there are a lot of design defaults in my first layout with an island and came up with a new design with a peninsula instead. I finally received the revised cabinets on Oct, 23rd. But unfortunately when I opened all the box and tried to reduce the smell from the cabinets, I found out my designer ordered the wrong door material for me. Everything I have is Evercore which is basically MDF, but I ordered the solid maple. There are several other mistakes also including the wrong size of the valence to cover my soffit, lacking of a toekich drawer for one of the cabinets, and no scooped drawer for my cooktop. Now my designer said it was me who changed mind to order the EVERCORE door. Home depot refused to change the cabinets even though I have already emailed their CEO. They did not even refund the cabinets I returned. I have already demoed my old kitchen since the first batch of cabinets I received on Aug. 14th.

I am going to hand it to my lawyer, but he is only available after 12th of this month. I have contacted my credit card company, but I only paid half of it with my credit card, I paid the other half with HD gift cards. Also my credit card company will need up to 90-120 days to get a result.

I do not know what to do with my kitchen now. I have a two year old and a freshman. It caused so much trouble for my family. Should I just install those cabinets I received in order to at least have a kitchen to use and change the door later on? Or should I leave those cabinets until the problem is solved and get new cabinets somewhere else now?

Any comments are appreciated. I am desperate.

I wouldn't touch the cabinets until your situation is resolved. I can only imagine what a hardship that might be for your family, but installing them will probably mean that the cabinets are yours. At least wait until you can discuss this with your attorney.

What outcome do you want? Do you want your solid maple cabinets? My guess is that you will have to wait for your attorney to work that out. In the meantime, IKEA has modular kitchens that for a few hundred dollars can have you functional.

Did you pay for maple or evercore? What is on your receipt? We chose evercore due to our climate and research on how it holds up with paint, we had painted maple in our last house and most of the seams showed separation after a few years. I'd take a refund of the difference (if you paid for maple) and install those cabinets. You can always replace the doors down the line.

@eam44 @itsourcasa Thank you very much for the comments. I want the solid maple door. I paid over 15,000 for my kitchen cabinets and some vanities for two of the bath rooms also. I do not want to end up with something which is not even solid wood. I always want the solid wood door.

If that is what you want, and you have an attorney who can work to get that for you, then I would leave the boxes untouched, install a modular kitchen for $500, and just wait for it to work out.

Did you pay for the maple door? What is on your receipt? If you're set on maple I'd again ask for a refund/return of what you have. Contact corporate and go through social media to get a resolution through HD and/or Kraftmaid before a lawyer.

@itsourcasa On the receipt, it is EverCore. I contacted kraftmaid and was told I have to talk with homedepot to find a solution. Home depot buys cabinets from them.

@eam44 If the maple cabinets are ordered, the only difference will be the material of the doors, the boxes are the same. This is why I am considering installing the cabinets without waiting any longer.

It doesn't matter what you want or wanted so much as what was on the order that you placed with Home Depot. What did that say?

I just placed an order for window treatments with Home Depot and before I paid anything, they handed me a 15-or-so page order that detailed what I was buying. That I went through every line of, to make sure that it listed what we wanted. Home Depot should have provided that type of documentation.

So you left the store thinking you bought solid maple doors and didn't realize 'till they were delivered that the doors are mdf. That's a tough one. You literally got what you paid for, it just wasn't what you wanted. The boxes are the same, the doors are not what you wanted.

The thing is, I don't know if it's OK to proceed with the installation. Worst case scenario: if you move forward and have to keep the cabinet doors you got, is that OK with you?

If it's on the receipt as evercore, neither HD or Kraftmaid made a mistake. Unfortunately that is on you and seems like it was either a miscommunication or human error on HD's part. We ordered from Lowes last week and she highlighted, had me initial in certain places and went over everything detail before we went to the counter for payment.

You said this was your 2nd delivery of cabinets? What was wrong the first time? Did you go back into the store to confirm the 2nd order?

It all comes down to what you signed for and what is on your receipt.

Other than that it's either you keep them or battle it out in court.

If the receipt says Evercore and you made a deposit, you are very likely stuck with the cabinets and any other changes will be chargeable to you.

@lexma90 When I purchased these cabinets, I communicated with my designer in person, then she created the design by making all selections on her computer. After that, she generated the quote by selecting the material, door style, color and other factors. After she told me the price, I made the payment by signing my credit card, not the invoice with details of all the cabinets I bought. During the whole process, there is no place where I can check all her selections.

@itsourcasa home depot did not let me check anything before she processed the order. I did not sign any of the order. I just signed the payment for my credit card.

Both orders are wrong. But I had one order before the first order I received which was cancelled the next day because there was one detail I need to confirm . On that order, it was still solid maple.

That stinks. I hope you can get all of the mistakes fixed.

Oh man I'm sorry I feel bad saying it but it's on you for not checking. I saw my designers computer the entire time she was designing. I was never behind the desk, she pulled up a chair next to her. Also she printed out several copies for me and it said clear as day on top the box material, door material, door style and colors. They didn't let you check? Or you didn't ask to check?

Did you sign for the design? If yes and it states your wishes then you might have a leg to stand on.

By making a payment I believe it's implied you accepted the order (Gray area)

Is the door style you wanted available only in the Evercore? or both?

You might still have an issue because you should of checked the order before making a deposit and leaving the building, but it doesn't hurt to try to speak to Corporate or a lawyer see if they can meet you half way.

@itsourcasa Every time we make any change, my designer will need to select all door material, color, door style etc. all over again. I did not check every time. But I confirmed with her several time during the whole process.

@Filipe Custom Woodwork The door style is the same with a different name for everCore. I never heard my designer mention that name. The only place I signed is the credit card payment. On the design there is no material info.

I had a very different experience at Lowes. I got a 15-page printout of every cabinet, dimensions, etc with all pertinent info of what I was purchasing. I hope you can get it resolved!

My designer does not have much patience with me. She is not very skilled too. Sometimes she does not know how to work with the software Even though she is working there for 20 years.

The Cook's Kitchen that was exactly my experience at Lowes as I mentioned above. Very thorough, multiple signatures/initials, printouts, etc.

Maybe try going into the store and talking to a manager and having the designer there with you during this talk. You can say verbally you were adamant about maple and didn't sign anything that said evercore. Worth a shot, but it's a long shot I think...

Have your designer talk to her rep. Some of the reps can be very helpful in these situations. And the Kraftmaid rep I had was so fabulous in this type of situation.

Can the doors only be changed to Evercore? Then you can get your cabinets installed and the countertop templates. Although Evercore is a better product for painted doors because you eliminate the expansion/contraction issues that are problematic with solid wood doors.

The toe kick drawer is an accessory that can be ordered and installed by your contractor. Sometimes the rep can take care of getting that part.

The valance just needs to be reordered to the correct size. Usually they need to be cut to size on site during the install.

Work with the designer and the rep to resolve your issues.

Agree with Cooks Kitchen. Blessing in disguise. Keep them and move on. It will be just as gorgeous!
