Positioning of art above sofa & arm chair

last modified: 6 years ago

Hi All,

First time poster here!

I'm looking to add some art work on the wall above a corner couch and an arm chair, but I'm not exactly sure what size, orientation or position I should do and whether I should maybe put a mirror on the wall too or not?

Below is an image of the wall above the corner couch and arm chair and would be really grateful if anyone can give me some suggestions please, as I am quite lost as to what to do with this wall!

I am also going for a blue and yellow theme, as I have a grey and yellow patterned swivel chair and some royal blue cushions on the couch.

Thanks so much.

Can you take a pic from further back? What is on the other walls in the space? Is this a casual TV watching sort of space with a sectional? Because if it is, I might consider large graphic posters that would wrap around.

I agree with jmm1837. A wide piece could look good here, or perhaps a gallery wall of multi-size frames. You could opt for artwork/photos in them that have touches of blues and yellows

Hi Holly Bar, here are some more pictures of the room. There is nothing on the walls at present, as it is a new build. Going for a blue and yellow sort of cosy theme.

Jmm1837 - I'd love to get the armchair out of the corner, but there is nowhere else for it to go and works well when I have friends over and we are watching tv etc.

I was thinking of maybe 3 large portrait style pieces of art work on this wall, but I am really clueless!

    Thanks so much x

Here is a vision of what your room could look like. However, I agree that the first thing you need to look at it the furniture arrangement. Can we please see photos of all 4 walls?

The chair there makes no sense and IMO the art needs to be centered on the back of the sofa not on the wall but get that chair out of the corner and BTW the picture needs to show the whole room

    Not a Pro.

If there is no way you can move the chair out of the that corner, try putting it next to the sectional and the end table next to the wall.

But before that happens lets see all four walls.

Hi, CRC Design, thank you for your nice reply! I will send across some photos of the whole room when I get home from work tonight.

Patricia, what do you suggest I put in place of the chair then? And where else in the room could it go?

In response to your 'BTW', there is nothing in the room apart from the furniture in the photos that I have uploaded.

Hi Njmomma, Yes I had thought about pushing them both together, but then worried that there wouldn't be anywhere to put a cup of coffee etc while sitting on either piece of furniture, if that makes sense! Will get photos across asap. Thanks :)

Thanks, Kate. Love your screen name!

Yes, I can help you better arrange your furniture, if I can see all four walls. Thanks much.

The rendering I did is only to show you what are would look like centered on the wall, with a couple of pillows.

I am assuming the chair you showed is also in the room? You mentioned blues and yellows, but the chair is somewhat horseradish/chartreuse. Hence, I added those colors.

Great, thanks so much CDR. I'll send over photos as soon as I can and if you were able to potentially do up a 3d or CAD or something to give me a better idea, that would be fantastic.

I was thinking instead of maybe all art work on that back wall, some maybe feature pieces, if that makes sense?

Yes, the swivel chair is in the room! There is no blue in it, I just like grey, blue and yellow together, so have sort of made that the theme of the room! The other colours in that swivel chair are a light grey and then a darker grey, if that helps.

Yes, I see there is no blue in the chair. The photoshop rendering I did is only to give you a general idea.

No art should be chosen until the furniture is correctly positioned.

I would be happy to create a floor plan as well as 3d rendering, Please just click on my name or email me at clare@cdrdesign.com. Thanks!

Hello all, I've been trying to upload these pictures several times now, but hopefully this time works!

The blue vases on the window sill have now been replaced with glass vases, which can be seen in image 2

This will all be thrown out and I'll hopefully be inserting a skinny wall unit in cream, similar to picture 2

    Empty Floor plan

Floor plan, with current furniture inserted. Thank you all for your time on this!

Hi Kate. Thanks for the photos, etc.!

An ideal situation would be a sofa on the long wall and 2 chairs on the window wall. All should be able to see the tv from those positions.

Now, the question is: what are you willing to buy and/or reconfigure?

Example: one scenario is that you could remove the corner piece from the sectional, making the sectional into a sofa. Then, purchase 2 matching chairs.

Would you be willing to do that?

You'll need a lamp that casts a softer shadow on the wall. What you have now will light up only a portion of the artwork and will almost certainly look strangely off-center.

Do you have any measurements you can share? Of room and furniture? Even with these pics, I'm still not picturing the whole room, sorry. Any coffee table in the room? Would you need a full wall of storage as in the blue unit pic you shared? What would you do with the indent on that TV wall?

As for figuring out wall decor, what inspires you? That should be the starting point. Figuring out sizes can be done with butcher or kraft paper cut out to different sizes and taped to the wall. Try one large horizontal piece, two large horizontal ones, three vertical ones, a gallery style...your imagination and taste determine this. How do you want to fill the wall? As for a mirror, think of what it will reflect from different vantage points. Sometimes, it's not worth it, especially if the room gets ample light.

Hi CDR Design, unfortunately I can’t remove the corner piece of the sofa as it comes all as one. If I could picture the room completely redesigned, without the corner sofa or swivel chair, I’d contemplaye selling those 2 pieces of furniture and redoing it all, even though they are brand new! Ideally though I’d like to make the room work with the corner sofa and swivel chair, as they were pretty expensive pieces!

hi Daniel, that lamp is just a cheap Ikea one that I have there for the time being. It won’t be staying!

Hi Tartanmeup, j have measurements on my laptop and will send those across ASAP. There is literally nothing on the floor apart from a small yellow rug! I’d hang a TV in the indent of the tv wall. thinking approx 55inch.

Great point about the mirror! To be honest, at this stage I think I’d just love someone to come in and completly redo the whole room as I feel like I’ve made quite a few mistakes!

Okay. If you want to keep the sectional and swivel chair, then I recommend,

    OPT 1

-move sectional to center it on the wall

-leave swivel chair where it is

    -eliminate grey chair

    OPT 2

-place sectional along window wall (it would sit out from the window and you could walk behind

-place swivel chair where sofa is now

    OPT 3

-Tv on wall where sectional is now

-sectional on wall where tv is

-swivel chair on wall opposite windows.

If you share more info about how you use the room, I'm sure pros will help you figure out the optimal layout and pieces. We've all made decorating mistakes and sometimes, it's best to take stock and reassess goals. If a piece just isn't working in the room, don't let it boss you around, ime. You can't end up with a room you love by doing that. You usually end up compounding the issue and resenting the whole room.

Does that indent/nook serve any functional purpose? Not sure of the point of hanging a TV in that spot.

Yes.....if it makes you feel any better, I see this all of the time.....clients who have purchased the wrong pieces for a space. You can use them, but the situation will never be ideal.

I recommend you try some of my suggested floor plans and see how you like them. You can go from there.

Another way to save money.....I don't think you need that huge entertainment piece. It is just another expense and something to fill with stuff (more things to buy!). A low, simple console would be much better. I actually don't see much wrong with the one you have right now, but maybe you don not like it.

I think all you have to do is to angle that gray chair in front of the small recess right of the TV and center your sectional on its wall. Then center art 5" above the sofa. Pull the patterned chair into the area where the lanterns are like you originally had it. Put the lanterns on the other side of it, without the table (both of them are too short for our seating pieces.) Here's a chart to help get those and a lamp sorted out. You could also use a floor lamp in the recess with the patterned chair for a reading nook. I like your piece under the TV, but is that a rad behind it?

Agree with above, can you try and put gray chair near that recessed area? and then move swivel over? I think overall it's just too much furniture for the space. You could get rid of swivel and gray chair and put 2 smaller footprint chairs (swivel or wood framed) in front of the window area. Table in-between. Plants near the window, behind the chair. I'm no pro though!

Thank you all. Centering the sectional seems to be a good idea, but just not sure what to put either side of it. Is anybody any good at Cad or 3D's etc? Haha. Thank you! I'm a very visual person!

Try "C" tables. They can go over the arms or sit beside or sit in front. Useful for drinks, laptop, food.

Are you willing to remove the matching chair from the room? Will that suit your seating needs? It does not look to me like there is enough space for both chairs in the window alcove. In the little niche, how about shallow floating shelves? I would not put tables on both sides of the newly centered sectional (a basket would do as below), but I might put a slim console behind it. And definitely a visual light weight coffee table. Remember space around furniture is as important as the furniture itself.

IOW, first get the furniture arranged, then eventually art.
